Role Purpose
The Business Development Manager – Capital Markets will support and work closely with partners to develop and implement business development and marketing strategies for the firm's U.S. offices. The BDM will also collaborate with business development teams across the firm to support the Capital Markets practices.

Job Description
Context
This role is partner‑facing and involves serving as the go‑to for partners and other fee earners for all BD and marketing within the U.S. Corporate groups. The BDM is crucial to the group's execution of its strategy and to day‑to‑day success of the business. It involves strategy, pitches, market research, events, PR and day‑to‑day marketing processes management, planning and execution.
Role and Responsibilities
Practice strategy, planning and execution – develop and implement business development strategy and plans for each partner and practice, including global initiatives, target client lists and ongoing development.
Pitches, proposals and credentials – create competitive proposals, credentials, pitches and presentations for work originating in the Capital Markets Practice and the A&O Shearman network.
Cross‑practice and cross‑office integration – coordinate existing projects, develop new opportunities, share ideas, and develop best practices across the Americas business development team.
Market research – conduct research on prospective clients and market issues and advise on effective marketing strategies.
Marketing discussion and review – chair meetings with practice groups to review progress on marketing projects and key client targeting; disseminate information to relevant internal groups.
Profile/PR – work with the PR team to spot opportunities and maintain press coverage on major developments; draft entries for legal and industry directories.
Sponsorships and client events – identify and coordinate firm sponsorships of conferences, plus plan client events and seminars with the U.S. Events Specialist.
Expertise database – maintain records of proposals and matters, ensuring appropriate documentation and dissemination.
Team management – mentor junior team members, allocate work opportunities, support career goals, manage appraisals and promotion discussions.

This position reports directly to the Director of Business Development – Corporate and works closely with other members of the U.S. business development team and the global corporate business development team.
Key Requirements
Minimum 5 years of legal or professional services experience in a high‑profile, fast‑paced environment.
Enthusiasm to develop an in‑depth understanding of capital markets, with experience in these sectors preferred.
Excellent written and verbal communication skills; high attention to detail and strong client focus.
Excellent interpersonal and influencing skills – with partners, key associates, business development colleagues and clients; ability to sell concepts and present to senior management.
Strong project management skills – able to prioritize effectively while managing multiple conflicting deadlines.
Proven track record of achieving strategic business objectives and using experience to determine people and financial resources required for specific projects.
Experience with budgeting, including writing business cases is a plus.
Strong knowledge of MS Word, PowerPoint, and Excel.
Bachelor's degree required.
