Job Summary The Vice President of External Affairs organizes and directs strategic vision and goals related to Development, Public Affairs and Education. Serves as a member of the Executive Leadership Team and collaborates with the President & CEO, senior colleagues, and board members to provide guidance and share information regarding their area of expertise. The role demonstrates collaborative leadership and management of Planned Parenthood’s statewide development, communications, public affairs, and educational outreach programs.
Responsibilities Development: supervise and direct the fundraising program (individual giving, major donor cultivation, direct mail, online giving, planned giving, special events, foundation relations) with a focus on identification, cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship of fundraising prospects. Develop annual strategies to create, maintain, and designate donor cultivation and increase annual giving across donor segments. Oversee personal solicitation programs and coordinate fundraising events (e.g., large annual events) in partnership with senior leadership; ensure records and training documentation comply with state programs, grants, and contract requirements.
Public Affairs: supervise the Public Affairs Director and statewide strategies to expand the geographic, political, and demographic base of support; develop grassroots advocacy programs; monitor legislative activity and assist in drafting legislation; center health equity in policy/advocacy work; coordinate media efforts and develop plans to grow supporter engagement and strategic partnerships; maintain a safe work environment and ensure compliance with policies and legal requirements; stay informed on family planning tools and professional knowledge.
Education: oversee statewide education strategies, curricula, and training for schools, individuals, and community groups on reproductive health and healthy sexuality; monitor program development, grant objectives, and fiscal management; represent agency goals in schools and the community.
Other Executive Functions: coordinate collaboration among Education, Development, and Public Affairs; serve as a liaison with PPFA and local legal teams; network nationally to expand PPDE programs; act as spokesperson and trainer on sexual and reproductive health; manage staffing and professional development; oversee budgeting and compliance and maintain HIPAA/PPDE confidentiality; participate in annual team reviews and advance DEIB initiatives.
Qualifications Bachelor’s degree in business management, organizational leadership, communications, public health, political science, or related field required; master’s degree preferred.
Minimum five years of successful nonprofit fundraising experience; five to ten years of progressively responsible program management experience; at least three years supervisory experience (senior-level management preferred); experience with grant-funded programming.
Experience with capital campaigns and planned giving highly desirable; knowledge of health education, family planning, and reproductive health care issues preferred; familiarity with Delaware community leaders and agencies in health education and prevention preferred.
Strong reasoning, multitasking ability, and organizational skills; ability to work under pressure and meet deadlines; commitment to proactive problem solving.
Excellent written and verbal communication, public speaking, and interpersonal skills; ability to engage diverse groups professionally and non-judgmentally.
Budget management skills and familiarity with basic accounting principles; proficient computer skills and ability to learn new software; capacity to access electronic communications.
