Program dates

Location
NYC Hybrid (three days per week on-site)

Company laptop will be provided for the duration of the program.

Weekly schedule
28 hours per week, Monday-Thursday, 9:00am-5:00pm, with a one-hour lunch break.

Pay rate
$17.00/hour

As an HBG editorial intern at Basic Books Group , you will have the opportunity to work closely with seasoned professionals and gain hands‑on professional experience as you own day‑to‑day tasks, help with special projects, and attend departmental meetings.

Basic’s hybrid summer intern will support our team by assisting editorial staff with projects pertaining to both Basic’s frontlist and backlist. We are looking for a motivated and organized individual who is eager to learn about the publishing industry and be part of an intellectually curious team. This position is an opportunity for someone with an interest in serious ideas who wants to learn about all editorial facets of book publishing, from acquisition to post‑publication.

To enhance your work experience, we offer educational sessions featuring speakers from all departments of the company as well as networking and career development opportunities.

Who you are

College student, graduating senior, or recent graduate

Strong interest in nonfiction book publishing

Comfortable working with books across nonfiction categories and the political spectrum

Extremely detail oriented and organized

Self‑starter with strong interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills

Resourceful with the ability to balance multiple responsibilities and work independently

Possess a great attitude and a desire to learn

Proficient in MS Word and Excel

What you will learn

Draft descriptive copy and research comparative works and sales figures

Review backlist titles for metadata and reprint update and correction

Assist with book mailings and awards submissions

Contribute to discussions of proposed books and potential authors

Perform general administrative duties
