This internship opportunity is only available to graduate students currently enrolled at select APA Internal Internship Program academic partner institutions: Howard University, Montclair State University, or University of Virginia. Psychology Team, Education Unit, Child and Adolescent Learning and Well-Being
The American Psychological Association (APA) is seeking a creative and detail-oriented Film Editing Intern to support the development of short-form educational, informational, and promotional videos. These videos aim to communicate psychological science in ways that promote child and adolescent learning, development, and well-being.
This is a great opportunity for students passionate about storytelling, education, and media production to gain hands-on experience in a mission-driven organization.
Key Duties & Responsibilities:
Edit short videos using APA-provided footage, graphics, and audio
Collaborate with APA staff to shape compelling narratives from interviews and research content
Add titles, transitions, and basic motion graphics to enhance viewer engagement
Ensure final videos are optimized for web and social media platforms
Assist with organizing and archiving video assets
Interns will generally be expected to work for a minimum of 10 hours (including approximately 1 hour of Internal Internship Programming) per week. Specific hour-to-academic credit ratios will be agreed upon between the intern's university and the APA hiring team.
Expected Learning Objectives & Professional Advancement Opportunities:
Strengthen storytelling skills by transforming interview footage and research-based content into clear, engaging, and audience-centered narratives
Apply principles of digital media production to optimize video content for web and social media platforms, including pacing, formatting, and audience engagement strategies
Build collaboration and communication skills through iterative feedback cycles with cross-functional teams in a mission-driven organization
Gain experience in media asset management, including organizing, archiving, and maintaining video content for efficient production workflows
Required Qualifications:
Ideal Candidates Are:
Students studying Film, Television and Digital Media, Art and Design, Journalism, or Recording Arts and Production
Proficient in video editing software (e.g., Adobe Premiere Pro)
Comfortable working with audio, B-roll, and interview footage
Organized, communicative, and open to feedback
Preferred Skills (Not Required):
Experience with motion graphics or animation
Familiarity with captioning and accessibility standards
Interest in educational or nonprofit media
We are currently only accepting applications only for interns who are (1) in graduate school [Master's or PhD], (2) able to receive academic credit from their school for their internship; (3) able to commit to a full year [September 2026-May 2027]; and (4) living/working in an APA-approved state (Internships at APA).
Enrollment at an APA Internal Internship Program academic partner institution (Howard University, Montclair State University, or University of Virginia) is required.
Job Location - Remote: APA internships may be considered for remote work eligibility as defined in APA's Flexible Work Policy and are subject to approval. Remote work interns may not work from the following states or U.S. territories: Alaska, Arkansas, California, Colorado, Guam, Hawaii, Iowa, Louisiana, Mississippi, Montana, Nebraska, New York, North Dakota, Ohio, Puerto Rico, Rhode Island, U.S. Virgin Islands, Washington, Wyoming.
