Role Summary
The Deputy Chief Journalist serves as the second-in-command within The Sentinel newsroom, supporting the Chief Journalist in leading editorial strategy, managing contributors, and ensuring consistent, high-quality storytelling aligned with Yuvoice’s mission and values.
This role blends editorial leadership, operational coordination, and hands-on journalism support. You will help shape what stories get told, how they are told, and ensure contributors are supported and accountable.
Key Responsibilities
Editorial Leadership and Strategy
Support development and execution of editorial priorities and content calendar
Help define coverage areas, themes, and storytelling standards
Step in for the Chief Journalist when needed
Contributor Management
Oversee a team of volunteer journalists, writers, and editors
Assign stories, set deadlines, and track progress
Provide feedback, coaching, and mentorship to contributors
Content Oversight
Review and edit submissions for clarity, accuracy, tone, and alignment with Yuvoice values
Ensure ethical journalism standards and fact-checking practices are followed
Maintain consistency in voice and storytelling quality
Operations and Workflow
Help build and maintain newsroom processes (pitch intake, approvals, publishing workflow)
Track story pipeline and publishing timelines
Collaborate with marketing and social teams to amplify published content
Community and Culture
Foster an inclusive, supportive environment for global contributors
Encourage diverse perspectives and underrepresented voices
Reinforce Yuvoice values of resilience, boldness, creativity, justice, and well-being
Qualifications
Experience in journalism, writing, editing, or content leadership
Strong editorial judgment and storytelling ability
Experience managing or mentoring contributors or teams preferred
Ability to balance strategy with execution in a fast-moving environment
Strong organizational and communication skills
Passion for mission-driven storytelling and community impact
