Technical Director/Designer
The Technical Director/Designer oversees the College of Musical Arts' technical production operations. This role requires a thorough understanding of music, including familiarity with classical music, technical concert production, stagecraft, and the ability to lead and collaborate effectively. Working primarily in Kobacker Hall and Bryan Recital Hall, duties include management of lighting and sets/props, equipment maintenance, equipment research and purchasing, room scheduling, load-in/load-out, safety, and supervision of student technical staff. The role serves as the Moore Musical Arts Center Scheduling Manager and Building Safety Coordinator, collaborating with Campus Operations staff and other campus partners. The Technical Director serves on the College Production Committee and works closely with the Manager of Recording Services, Operations Manager, Coordinator of Public Events, Piano Technician, and Wolfe Center personnel. This position reports to the Dean of the College of Musical Arts.
Duties include:
Coordination of all technical aspects of productions and operations of the numerous internal/external events
Lighting designer and master electrician (designing, rigging, focusing, cueing)
Facilitate and oversee process for placement and movement of chairs and music stands for rehearsals and concerts
Constructing and maintaining risers, acoustic shells, and other stage equipment as needed
Consult and assist with scenic design for College of Musical Arts and Department of Theatre/Film productions
Maintain all room schedules in Moore Musical Arts Center and coordinate scheduling with appropriate personnel in the Wolfe Center for the Arts
Supervision and training of technical and house staff
Maintenance of all Kobacker Hall and Bryan Hall stage and house equipment (excluding audio)
Coordinate Moore Musical Arts maintenance and safety issues, working as necessary with Campus Operations personnel, Associate Dean, and other campus partners
Serve on the College of Musical Arts Production Committee and attend staff meetings
Research and purchasing of equipment and materials
Manage budgets and prepare annual report
Other duties as assigned
The following Education is required:
Bachelor's degree
The following Education is preferred:
MA or MFA in Theatre, Theatre Design and Production, Technical Theatre, Stage Management or related field
The following Experience is required:
2 years stage management, electrical, lighting or construction experience
1 year of musical or theatrical production management or supervision
The following Experience is preferred:
3 years of musical or theatrical production management and/or supervision
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Strong organizational, supervisory, and leadership skills
Background in the performing arts, classical music, and concert production
Working knowledge of theatrical/stage construction and maintenance, including basic carpentry, electrical, and painting
Familiarity with Lightwright software
Proficiency with computer applications, including Microsoft 365 and event-scheduling software
Ability to lift up to 50 lbs. and work at heights, including climbing ladders
Ability to obtain university certification to operate powered industrial trucks, aerial work platforms, and fall-arrest equipment
