Staff Writer
Essential Job Functions
Compose engaging and informative social media posts
Draft and distribute newsletters to various stakeholders
Edit and proofread written content for accuracy and consistency
Research and gather information for journalistic pieces
Conduct interviews and gather quotes for news articles
Adhere to journalistic standards and ethics in all written materials
Collaborate with the Director of Media and Communications to ensure that all communications related to CAAS, its reputation, messages, and top-priority initiatives are well written, communicated, and promoted.
Assist employees throughout the CAAS with strategic communications as assigned.
Interact with the CAAS employees most commonly in:
Brainstorming sessions to decide the direction of communication projects
Conducting interviews serving as a basis for news and feature stories
Handling inquiries and final editing negotiations to ensure accuracy and alignment with objectives for published pieces
Qualifications
Minimum Education
A bachelor's degree is required in mass communications, journalism, public relations, or a related field.
Minimum Experience
A minimum of 5 years of experience as a news reporter in communications, marketing, public relations, or a media environment is required; experience in an academic environment is preferred. An advanced degree is preferred.
Knowledge Skills and Abilities
Excellent interpersonal, customer relations, communication, and organizational skills
Proficiency in computer skills, including Microsoft Office products, email, and the internet
Strong planning and organizational skills, including attention to detail and ability to handle multiple projects and deadlines
Ability to write clearly and persuasively on various subjects related to agriculture and applied sciences, using journalistic norms and skills
Research and writing experience, both independently and collaboratively
Ability to interpret and organize complex information into understandable copy for the average reader
Knowledgeable in the use of camera equipment
Familiarity with the Associated Press writing style
Minimum of 5 years of professional experience as a writer or editor, with excellent skills in feature
ews writing, grammar, editing, copyediting, and proofreading.
