Assistant Photo Editor
The Wall Street Journal is seeking an Assistant Photo Editor to support Features coverage areas in New York. WSJ. Magazine and the Features teams blend deep reporting, intelligent wit and good taste to create compulsively readable spot stories, analysis and features on the subjects of style, entertainment, celebrity, society, lifestyle and the arts — with a fast‑paced, robustly reported execution.
We are looking for an Assistant Photo Editor with both a stylish sensibility and journalistic integrity who brings a background in photography or shoot production. You must also have a digital, deadline‑driven background and be able to work quickly while also balancing managing Photo Department logistics and organization. Most importantly, you should be excited about photography, ranging from portraiture, fashion photography, reportage, research imagery and conceptual still‑life – your own photography is a plus.
Key Responsibilities
Support the WSJ. Magazine Photography Director and the Head of Creative.
Assist with administrative tasks for the Photography Department.
Maintain meticulous budget oversight, tracking departmental invoices and costs, with a path toward owning dedicated budgets.
Represent Journal interests and negotiate rates with relevant contractors and third‑parties.
Manage files, keeping track of image storage locations on servers and shared drives.
Produce, pull, and build visual assets for WSJ. Magazine and Features content as assigned, including photo research, commissioning portraits and reportage, or photo illustration with a digital‑first storytelling focus.
Always hit deadlines, balancing fast‑paced spot deadlines with longer‑lead features and enterprise stories.
Pitch visually innovative and original approaches to coverage, demonstrating an understanding of the different platforms and audiences.
Work closely with photo editors, WSJ newsroom photo editors, and our platform teams.
Qualifications
1‑3 years of experience working at a publication or in a similar role.
Deep love of photography, whether taking your own photos or browsing your favorite photographer’s work.
Excellent news judgment, fast digital editing skills and an expansive understanding of mobile‑first experience and design.
Strong research skills, including newsgathering and social media tools.
Strong organizational, communication and collaborative abilities.
A creative vision and enthusiasm to spearhead and collaborate on new ideas.
Basic understanding of Photoshop and other photography‑related software.
The ability to be a self‑starter who collaborates well with larger teams.
You will report to the Photography Director. This position is based in our New York office.
To apply, please submit your resume, a cover letter explaining how you would approach the job and a link to a portfolio of your past photo‑editing or producing work by May 22.
Equal Opportunity Employer
All qualified applicants will receive consideration for employment without regard to race, color, religion, sex, age, national origin, protected veteran status, disability status or any other protected characteristic under applicable law.
Reasonable Accommodation
We are committed to providing reasonable accommodation for qualified individuals with disabilities in our job application and/or interview process.
