Technical Writer Job at Blue Robotics in Torrance

Blue Robotics, Torrance, CA, USA

Pay: $70,000-$85,000/yr

Job type: Full Time

Blue Robotics makes affordable, high-quality hardware and software for marine robotics - from underwater thrusters and ROVs to autonomous surface vehicles and the software that runs them. We're a small, passionate team building tools that researchers, engineers, educators, and ocean enthusiasts use around the world.

About the Role
We're looking for a Technical Writer to join our product experience team and contribute to the documentation experience across our products. You'll work closely with subject matter experts, translating complex technical content into clear, accurate, and useful guides that help our customers build, operate, and get the most out of Blue Robotics products.

Great guides are a core part of the Blue Robotics product experience. As a technical writer, you’ll be directly shaping how our customers understand and use our products. This role isn't for someone who will just follow a product spec and write steps - the right person will think deeply about how people learn, how to sequence information, and how to make complex things feel approachable and even enjoyable. You'll bring creative ideas to raise the bar on what a product guide can be.

We use AI as part of our workflow, and you should be comfortable using it to support research, editing, and iteration. But our guides need to feel human. We’re not looking for someone who relies on AI to do the writing, you should be able to create clear, well‑structured content on your own.

What You’ll Do

Write and maintain assembly guides, software setup guides, operator manuals, integration guides, and repair documentation for Blue Robotics products

Develop clear, step‑by‑step instructional content that works for a wide range of users – from first‑time builders to experienced engineers

Capture product photography and create visual content – diagrams, exploded views, assembly sequences, and annotated images to complement and enhance written guides

Approach each guide as an educator – thinking about the user’s mental model, sequencing information for clarity, and finding the best format (text, diagram, video, interactive) to make concepts stick

Keep existing documentation current as products evolve, software updates ship, and new integrations are released

Maintain product revision history, ensuring documentation accurately reflects the current state of each product

Cross‑functional Collaboration

Work closely with the engineering and software teams to understand new products, features, and technical specifications

Gather feedback from customer support and community forums to identify gaps and improve existing content

Standards & Systems

Help establish and maintain documentation standards, templates, and style guidelines

Contribute to improving the organization and navigability of the learn library

Identify opportunities for new guide content or use videos, diagrams, and other formats to enhance written content

Who We’re Looking For
Required

Demonstrated experience writing technical documentation – assembly guides, user manuals, software docs, or similar

An educator’s mindset – you think about how people learn, not just what they need to know

Ability to understand and accurately communicate complex technical concepts

Strong attention to detail and a clear, direct writing style

Comfortable working closely with engineers and asking the right questions to get what you need

Self‑directed – you can manage multiple projects and deadlines without heavy oversight

Preferred

Background or strong interest in marine technology, robotics, electronics, or a related field

Experience teaching, tutoring, creating course content, or otherwise communicating technical skills to non‑experts

Experience with tools like Photoshop, Illustrator, and SolidWorks or a demonstrated ability to pick up new software quickly

Familiarity with ROVs, marine robotics, or Blue Robotics products specifically

Experience creating or collaborating on instructional video or visual content

Genuine enthusiasm for teaching and helping people develop new skills and confidence

A background in technical communication, engineering, marine science, or a related field is a plus – but we care more about your writing samples than your diploma
