POSITION SUMMARY:
The Head Band Director is responsible for leading and overseeing all aspects of the Band program. This teacher is a highly qualified and state-certified educator responsible for delivering Band/Music instruction in a differentiated manner aligned with the Indiana Academic Standards for Instrumental Music. The Head Band Director also provides leadership in program development, student performance preparation, and coordination of band activities and events.
MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITES:
Lead and oversee all aspects of the high school Band program, including, but not limited to: marching band, concert bands, and jazz bands
Have a working knowledge of best practices in Music Education, arts integration, and Indiana Academic Standards for Instrumental Music, while implementing a curriculum based in creativity
Guide, motivate, and engage students in learning, including understanding the principles of music, music reading, musicianship, and specific instrumental and performance skills through solo and ensemble practice and performances
Enhance symbolic communication, promote self-esteem, self-motivation, aesthetic awareness, cultural exposure, creativity, improved emotional expression and social harmony, relationships, team-building, cooperation, self-confidence, and provide an avenue for building performance competencies
Make use of quality instrumental literature in diverse styles appropriate in difficulty and range for students
Maintain a safe classroom using appropriate classroom management skills
Complete and maintain all required student records
Utilize SBCSC technology, as required
Attend and participate in required staff meetings and building-wide trainings and initiatives
Collaborate with building staff to integrate the arts into their curriculum, as well as their curriculum into the music curriculum
Plan, rehearse, and direct students in a minimum of two concerts per year (Semester I and Semester II) at the building level. These performances should include all performance classes.
Prepare students to participate in annual district All-City performances
Prepare students to perform in the ISSMA Solo & Ensemble and Organizational contests, when possible
Prepare students to perform for additional community and extracurricular concerts, when scheduled
Utilize instructional materials and resources recommended by the district
Follow SBCSC Musical Instrument Rental procedures for students who choose to rent an SBCSC-owned musical instrument
Maintain and keep available an accurate inventory of band instruments housed within the school
Participate in all Fine Arts Instrumental Music recruiting events
Attend corporation Fine Arts and Instrumental Music staff meetings, as scheduled
Establish performance requirements, enforce academic requirements, and verify each student's eligibility to participate in band
Provide for band participation at school-related and community events, such as concerts, recruiting performances, and community outreach activities
Compile budgets and cost estimates based on documented program needs
Coordinate fundraising activities and management of funds
Facilitate cleaning, repairing, and storing all band equipment
Develop and implement plans for the instrumental music program and show written evidence of preparation, including lesson plans, as required
Conduct ongoing formative and summative assessments of student achievement
Accompany and supervise students on in-town and out-of-town trips
Maintain open communication and professional relationships with all stakeholders
Comply with district policies, as well as state and federal laws and regulations
Adhere to the district's safety policies and procedures
Maintain confidentiality in the conduct of district business
Demonstrate regular and prompt attendance
Other duties as assigned
QUALIFICATIONS:
Licensed and Highly Qualified in Instrumental Music Education. Knowledge of overall operations of instrumental music programs
Ability to manage budget and personnel
Knowledge of state, district and school policies and procedures
Ability to interpret district policies, procedures and data
Strong communication, public relations, and interpersonal skills
Experience working in an urban environment preferred
Must not currently be on a Performance Improvement Plan
