High School Musical Art Director

Purpose:
The Art Director is responsible for the visual and artistic design of the High School Musical. This includes conceptualizing and executing the overall look of the production, such as sets, props, and visual styling, in collaboration with the director and student teams. The Art Director ensures that the visual elements support the story and tone of the production while adhering to budget, safety, and school guidelines.

Key Responsibilities:
Collaborate with the play director to conceptualize and design the artistic vision for the production.
Create and oversee the development of set designs, backdrops, props, and other visual elements.
Coordinate and supervise student crews involved in set painting, decoration, and prop creation.
Source, create, or approve all design materials, ensuring alignment with the production's theme and timeline.
Ensure all designs meet safety standards and are feasible within the physical space and budget.
Maintain the art room/work area and ensure proper cleanup after construction and painting.
Attend production meetings, rehearsals (as needed), and all technical rehearsals.
Assist in the setup and breakdown of sets before and after performances.
Support and mentor students in developing artistic and technical theater skills.
Qualifications:

Background in art, design, theater arts, or related field preferred.
Experience in scenic or theatrical design, especially in a school or educational setting.
Ability to conceptualize creative visual themes and translate them into workable designs.
Basic knowledge of scenic construction, painting techniques, and prop development.
Strong leadership and communication skills; ability to work collaboratively with staff and students.
Well-organized, dependable, and able to manage multiple tasks within a production timeline.
Commitment to maintaining a safe and inclusive creative environment.
Availability for after-school hours, evenings, and weekends during the production period.
