Freelance Item Writer (English Language Assessment)
Freelance Item Writers work with the Content Development team within the Assessment Services department. Item Writers play a critical role in the development of content for English language assessments, which provide evidence of English proficiency for academic admissions and government immigration programs. Item Writers work on a piece rate basis rather than hourly and report to the Content Development Manager.
Main duties include:
Authoring unique passages and test items for English language assessments
Completing item writing training packages prior to commencing work
Attending remote training sessions and ongoing training activities as needed
Reviewing and editing passages and items according to guidelines and feedback
Attending and actively participating in online item review workshops
Following test specifications and item writing best practices
Adhering to test security protocol and safeguarding confidentiality
Meeting content deadlines and managing assignment workload
Communicating effectively with the Content Development team
Working from a secure and private work location within Canada
Qualifications include:
An undergraduate or higher degree in English, Linguistics, Education, TESL, or related discipline
Exceptional English writing and editing skills and ability to apply feedback
Ability to author, review, and edit English language assessment content across a range of subject areas and difficulty levels
ESL/EFL teaching and/or curriculum development experience
Knowledge of the Canadian Language Benchmarks (CLB) and/or the Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR) is an asset
TESL/TESOL/CELTA certification is an asset
Item writing experience is preferred but not required
Canadian citizenship, Canadian permanent residency, or a valid Canadian work permit
