Job Description
Summary:
The Unconventional (TU) is seeking a qualified Hmong Reviewer/Editor/Certifier to support the Department of Justice (DOJ) with Translation, Interpretation, Transcription and other Linguistic Support Services (LSS). The role involves translating all manner of documents and media, providing court and deposition interpretation, and handling a wide range of legal and technical subject matter.
Responsibilities
Translate written and electronic documents, including legal, business, public administrative, medical, scientific, financial, historical, geographical, military, and technical content.
Transcribe and interpret audio and video media, including compact discs, .wav files, and other formats.
Provide court and deposition interpretation services as required.
Ensure all translations and transcriptions are factually accurate, preserve tone and register, and adhere to linguistic ethics.
Maintain strict confidentiality and comply with sensitivity controls for all materials.
Use Computer‑Assisted Translation (CAT) tools, with strong emphasis on SDL Trados Studio.
Required Qualifications
Minimum of five (5) years of experience within the past ten years in the required language with superior skills in English and editing.
Qualifying scores ILR 4 minimum or equivalent on language/translation tests.
Have lived 3 of the last 5 years in the U.S. (does not have to be consecutive).
At least 1 year of experience working with a law enforcement and/or legal department.
U.S. citizenship.
Strong knowledge of formal, legal, diplomatic, consultative, and casual language modes in both English and the target language.
Specialized vocabulary knowledge in domains such as government, law, medicine, finance, and technology.
Professional command of the non‑native language and fluent writing in the native language.
Ability to translate with factual and conceptual accuracy, avoiding changes, omissions, or additions.
Proficient in CAT tools, especially SDL Trados Studio.
Clearance
Active Public Trust or higher security clearance required.
Travel
Some travel may be required.
