Life Insurance Senior Under Underwriter II
Job Summary
The Senior Underwriter is responsible for screening life insurance applications for selection of risks rendering an issue standard, rate, or decline disposition with the guidance of an underwriter or written guidelines of multiple lines of business. The person will handle the implementation and explanation of underwriting policies and procedures related to the processing of new business and underwriting processes as related to other department processes. This person will be responsible for developing new guidelines based on industry or regulatory changes. All duties require identification of medical terminology, identification of prescription medications, use of the Swiss Re Underwriting manual, and evaluation of MIB, phone calls, motor vehicle records, lab results, paramedical exams, and medical records.
Primary Duties & Responsibilities
Responsible for screening life insurance applications including trial applications for selection of risks rendering either an issue standard, rate, or reject disposition
Implementation of underwriting policies and procedures related to the processing of new business and other department processes
Implementation of medical guidelines using the Swiss Re Underwriting manual and Globe company notes
MIB code reporting and interpretation of MIB code data
Review and evaluate results of oral saliva tests
Review and evaluate results of agent verification calls and other underwriting phone calls
Review and evaluate motor vehicle records (MVRs)
Review and evaluate prescription (Rx) histories to determine associated health conditions
Review, summarize, and evaluate medical records (APSs)
Review and evaluate paramedical exams and lab results including EKGs
Respond to customer service inquiries regarding dispositions
Evaluate health information received with add-ons, modifications, and reinstatements
Serve as the underwriting contact for SGAs, AOs, or pre-approval from Financial Advisors for underwriting information and escalated issues
Handle sensitive cases and positive drug screens
Handle aging or escalated cases where all information is not received to make a final decision
Handle referrals from other underwriters and screeners
Assist with training of underwriters, screeners, and other associated underwriting roles
Assist with other underwriting areas as deemed necessary by department management

Excellent PC skills Excel, MS Word, and MS-Outlook; MS Access a plus
Strong medical and underwriting knowledge required

Required Experience
Required Education and Experience
Some college coursework or bachelor’s degree preferred, however will consider 7+ years life insurance industry experience in lieu of degree
LOMA 280/281 LOMA 290/291 required; pursuit of FLMI preferred, Other industry courses will be considered
LOMA Underwriting (UND) required
Medical Terminology required
5+ years working as an Underwriter role or above
A combination of experience and education will be considered
