Job Overview

The Digital Content Producer plays a key role on WTOP’s expanding digital team in bringing local, timely and engaging news and information to audiences in the Washington D.C. metro region. The ideal candidate will blend strong editorial judgment, superb writing, copyediting and video editing skills to deliver engaging content across web and social media platforms. This is an in-office position.

Job Responsibilities

Write and copyedit news articles, and craft engaging headlines

Gather and produce in-house videos from a wide range of sources including reporters and news partners

Use digital assets (video, photos, graphics) in creative ways to increase engagement and reach with news consumers across digital platforms

Create compelling social media posts and alerts

Monitor local and national news outlets, social media and email to ensure the station is on top of the most relevant and breaking news stories of the day

Brainstorm and develop story ideas that impact and reflect the diverse region that the market covers

Actively pursue news tips that come in via email, phone calls or other sources

Work with digital and broadcast teams to ensure the highest journalistic standards and core brand attributes are met on a daily basis

Manage the homepage using news judgment and analytics to guide decisions

Works established schedule which may include mornings, weekends and late-night shifts.

Qualifications

2-3 years professional experience writing for a print or digital news organization

Sharp editorial instincts, news judgment and knowledge of current events at the local, national and international level

Digitally fluent, creative and versed in producing engaging content in copy and video

Excellent writing, copyediting and newsgathering skills

Proficiency in photo and video editing tools including Photoshop, Adobe Premier, Final Cut, Adobe Audition, Canva preferred

Proficiency with CMS systems such as WordPress

Familiarity with general usage rights for photos, video, audio preferred

Strong leadership skills with the ability to develop and maintain effective communication and relationships with staff

Ability to thrive in fast-paced environment and work effectively under pressure to multitask, prioritize and meet short deadlines

High level of initiative and the ability to work independently

Social media savvy

Project a professional appearance and demeanor at all times

Ability to work weekdays, weekends and holidays, early morning, midday and evening shifts.

Degree in journalism, communications or related field preferred

Must have reliable form of transportation. This is an in-office position.

Physical Requirements

Average sitting, standing and office-type movements. Light lifting, moving and pulling abilities. Ability to communicate in English both verbally and in writing. Ability to hear and see clearly. Dexterity to manipulate computer keys and other controls as well as other office equipment. Requires the ability to think critically and tactically and to articulate information in clear, concise manner to others verbally and in writing. Must be able to think quickly and work under tight deadlines and in pressure situations. The successful candidate must be able to perform the essential functions of the job. Compensation and Benefits

When extending an offer, the company considers a variety of factors such as (but not limited to) the candidate's work experience, education/training & key skills as well as internal peer equity and other market and business considerations. The hourly rate of pay for this position is $30.00 to $35.00 per hour.
