WORK FOCUS
This position is responsible for managing and directing the internal and external communications for Senator Art Haywood. This position controls the flow of information between the Senator’s office and the public and develops and implements the communications strategy.
TYPICAL JOB REQUIREMENTS
This position requires familiarity with branding, strategic planning, and messaging execution, as well as graphic and website design. The position also requires strong writing, editing, and proofreading skills. The Communications Director must be able to present relevant information in the Senator’s voice.
TYPICAL JOB DUTIES
Supporting the Senator in efforts to advance the policy agenda and legislative goals of the office
Coordinating with the Senator and other staff on legislative strategies
Writing press releases
Maintaining relationships with media outlets
Managing external communications, including social media accounts, newsletters, and press releases
Handling media requests for information Provides responsive constituent services, such as tracking and assisting with responses to constituent communications
Coordinating public appearances and events
Contacting and arranging for speakers, presenters and witnesses
Serving as Senator’s surrogate at public events, as needed
Evaluating communications campaigns
Monitoring public opinion
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
Communicates effectively with other departments, the public, and social and traditional media
Explains current issues or trends in communications and advises Senator and staff on effective engagement
Presents persuasive copy/media/content to support the Senator’s initiatives
Monitors social media for relevant topics/trends
Responds to media requests
Proofreads and corrects copy errors
Performs basic computing and uses technology effectively
Performs within prescribed office procedures
Performs related duties as required
Travel to events in the district and around the state as needed

Work effectively with a diverse group of elected officials, staff, journalists, stakeholders and other constituents
Shape diverse political views into a coherent overall message

Excellent oral and written communication skills
Knowledge of the office policies, practices, and procedures
Knowledge of office computer applications and general office technology
SALARY
Salary Range: $65,000-$80,000 per year dependent upon experience
