Associate Editor – Scientific Publications (Geology Focus)

Contract to hire position, 40 hours a week.

Converting salary range $63,000-68,000

Location: South Denver/Littleton

This position start fully onsite than drops to hybrid 2-3 days a week in office


A professional society in the geosciences field is seeking a full-time Associate Editor to support the production and editing of its quarterly member magazine and peer-reviewed journal. The organization is dedicated to advancing scientific understanding in applied and economic geology through research, publications, and community engagement.

This position combines editorial project management with hands-on copyediting of scientific manuscripts. The ideal candidate will have experience editing technical or research-based content and an appreciation for the geological sciences.


Key Responsibilities

  • Collaborate with editors, contributors, and production staff to plan and coordinate content for upcoming issues.
  • Edit scientific and technical text for accuracy, clarity, and consistency with established style guidelines.
  • Manage workflow and deadlines for a recurring publication schedule (both digital and print).
  • Partner with design staff to oversee layout and presentation.
  • Communicate with authors to finalize manuscripts and ensure adherence to editorial standards.
  • Support production logistics, marketing coordination, and other publication-related tasks as needed.


Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree or higher in English, communications, or a related discipline.
  • Background or interest in geology, earth science, or related scientific fields preferred.
  • Minimum of three years of editing or publication management experience.
  • Strong command of English grammar, style, and editorial best practices.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Word, Excel, and Adobe Acrobat or similar tools.
  • Excellent organization, multitasking, and communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently within a small, collaborative team environment.
