Borough of Manhattan Community College (BMCC) Office of Public Affairs works with organizations across New York City and beyond to prepare students for degree completion, successful transfer, career achievement, lifelong learning, and civic participation.

Responsibilities

Manages college communications efforts including public relations and campus communication efforts.
Establishes goals consistent with the College's mission and works collaboratively with senior management to develop short- and long-range plans to further outreach with external audiences.
Develops and maintains comprehensive press, public relations, and internal communications strategies.
Works collaboratively with the web content manager to edit and update BMCC's website and other digital communication sources, including electronic newsletters.
Helps prioritize public relations efforts and develop promotional campaigns through media outreach and internal communications.
Plans, organizes and develops content for key publications including BMCC Commons, @BMCC newsletter and BMCC's annual report.
Identifies and leverages opportunities to promote the visibility and reputation of the College.
Understands the principles of plain language and accessibility in public communications.
Applies AP Style and other editorial standards consistently.
Recognizes nuances in civic, governmental, and election-related communications.
Interprets analytics to guide content strategy.
Stays informed of trends in digital communications, social media, and voter engagement.
Identifies cultural and linguistic considerations for diverse NYC audiences.

Communications and Editorial Manager

Supports the AVP, Communications, Marketing and External Affairs in the development and implementation of a communications plan that identifies clear goals and strategies for the Office of Public Affairs.
Assists with advertising content consistent within overall marketing plans to achieve image, awareness and/or enrollment goals of BMCC.
Works with other College divisions to ensure cohesive brand messaging.
Monitors media coverage and prioritizes outbound communications and public relations efforts.

Qualifications

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Preferred Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree and six years related experience required.
Master's degree in English, Journalism, or related field is preferred.
Experience writing for a newspaper, blogging, social media, and/or email marketing.
Exceptional organization, project management and multitasking skills.
Strong written and verbal communication skills; able to write descriptive and creative marketing/persuasive copy.
Proven ability to motivate and lead others.
Proven ability to generate media coverage.
Strong media contacts with higher education publications and television news reporters are a plus.

CUNY Title Overview

Oversees implementation of communications programs and produces communications in all media to meet a variety of College needs.
Provides creative direction for publications and marketing materials such as catalogs, annual reports, brochures, direct mail packages, print advertising and other marketing materials.
Works with College clientele (faculty, administrators, and student representatives) to understand their communications objectives, select appropriate messages, formats, and distribution methods, set production timelines, and establish appropriate editorial and design approaches.
Provides creative direction and supervision to external and/or internal creative resources such as writers, photographers, illustrators and graphic designers.
Ensures consistent application of standards and guidelines for College materials, such as graphic identity standards.
Manages production activities, including creating printing specifications and arranging procurement of services, managing workflows, and production schedules, and assuring a quality finished product.
Prepares sensitive and high-priority communications such as speeches for use by senior management.
Performs related duties as assigned.

Compensation and Benefits

Salary range is $98,995 - $109,898; salary commensurate with education and experience. CUNY’s benefits include health plans, retirement/pension benefits, tuition waivers for CUNY graduate study, paid time off, and access to campus programs.
