The Senior Transmission Engineer plays a lead role in designing complex transmission line projects, overseeing technical execution, and guiding engineering staff. This position serves as a subject‑matter expert in transmission line design and sets best practices for major projects.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead transmission line design from concept through final engineering, ensuring all project requirements such as EFM, conductor sizing, induction, impedance, losses, and voltage‑drop criteria are met.
- Develop specifications and data sheets for transmission equipment; prepare RFQs, analyze bids, and make purchasing recommendations.
- Direct economic conductor selection efforts and lead grounding and lightning performance studies.
- Perform or oversee electrical clearance calculations in accordance with NESC and other relevant codes; guide the interpretation and application of NERC, FERC, and regional standards.
- Review vendor drawings for transmission equipment and coordinate closely with suppliers, clients, and cross‑disciplinary engineering teams.
- Support development of project schedules, scopes, budgets, staffing plans, and construction strategies, including management of change orders.
- Apply advanced knowledge of transmission engineering concepts, codes, and industry practices.
- Provide innovative, non‑standard design solutions for complex challenges.
- Perform quality reviews of production drawings and project data generated in various CAD platforms, ensuring all required corrections are completed.
- Oversee construction‑phase engineering tasks, including field coordination, issue resolution, calculations, inspections, and transmission system testing.
- Lead field inspections, installations, measurements, and calculations for both public‑ and private‑sector clients.
- Prepare and deliver technical reports for clients or industry publications.
- Build and maintain strong client, contractor, and customer relationships while identifying and nurturing new business opportunities.
- Participate in business development activities, including key pursuit identification, marketing support, and client‑facing presentations.
- Lead the creation of cost proposals and qualification packages, ensuring financial performance expectations are met.
- Present and manage project budgets, estimates, and performance updates.
- Provide leadership and mentorship within the transmission engineering team; guide and support less‑experienced engineers.
- Ensure adherence to QA/QC processes and promote effective communication with all engineering disciplines.
- Maintain compliance with organizational and site‑specific safety policies.
- Perform additional duties as required.
- Comply with all company standards and policies.
Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering or a related ABET‑accredited discipline, plus 7 years of transmission engineering experience (EPC experience preferred).
- Bachelor's degree in Civil or related Engineering Technology from an ABET‑accredited program plus successful completion of the FE exam, and 7 years of transmission engineering experience (EPC experience preferred).
- Master's degree in Engineering with 6 years of transmission engineering experience (EPC experience preferred).
- Expert knowledge of standard engineering methods; strong familiarity with transmission design codes and relevant software such as AutoCAD, MicroStation, Revit/BIM, Civil 3D, PLS-CADD, PLS, RISA‑3D, MathCAD, and related analysis tools.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Demonstrated experience leading discipline design on large projects and delegating tasks effectively within a team environment.
- Strong analytical thinking, attention to detail, organizational skills, and collaborative problem‑solving abilities.
- Ability to conduct thorough quality reviews of engineering documents and specifications.
- Ability to travel as needed.
- Professional Engineer (PE) licensure preferred.
