Sign‑On Bonus : $15,000 awarded in three installments – $5,000 at hire, $5,000 after training, and $5,000 at one year. Fully earned after two years.
Salary Range : $29.78 – $37.23 per hour.

The Transportation Department is responsible for providing safe, efficient and dependable transportation to commuters on all Metra‑operated lines: Milwaukee North and West, Rock Island, Metra Electric, Southwest Service, North Central Service and Heritage Corridor. This posting is specifically for Conductors on the Union Pacific North, Northwest, and West lines. A current conductor license is required.
Primary Duties
Work seven days per week with no regularly scheduled days off unless assigned a regular assignment.
Work hours may vary day‑to‑day based on seniority.
May be called to protect assignments in one of our yard facilities, working outdoors in all weather conditions. Yard duties include train rearrangement, storage of cars, switching and lining trains onto designated tracks.
May be called to protect assignments as an Assistant Conductor, Conductor or Collector in Commuter Service.
Perform switching operations to ensure on‑time performance, correct car routing and safe deliveries.
Complete intensive seven‑to‑ten‑week training (classroom and on‑the‑job) and pass exams with 85% or better.
Training & Certifications
All applicants must complete a seven‑to‑ten‑week training program that includes intensive classroom instruction and on‑the‑job/territory familiarization. Successful completion requires passing exams and quizzes with a minimum score of 85%.
Responsibilities
Operate trains safely, maintaining on‑time performance and ensuring crew and passenger safety.
Communicate verbally and in person and via radio, telephone, public announcement system, and hand signals.
Receive, relay and act upon directives from transportation officials, train dispatchers and customer service personnel.
Coordinate with police and emergency response personnel.
Conduct train inspections, including radio tests, brake tests and door operations, and inspect the exterior of the train in all weather conditions.
Manage cash fare collection, audit tickets, collect and remit ticket sale monies.
Requirements
High school diploma or GED or railroad experience.
Ability to submit work reports using electronic devices.
Ability to read and understand operating and safety rules, bulletins, special instructions and federal regulatory documents.
Proficient verbal and written communication skills to convey information to coworkers, supervisors, railroad employees and customers.
Physical & Work Conditions
Push, pull, lift and carry objects up to 25 lbs.
Normal color vision and depth perception.
Walk, climb and maintain balance on railcars, locomotives, stairs, ladders, uneven terrain and moving equipment.
Work at heights up to 12 feet or more when necessary.
18 years of age or older.
Wear personal protective equipment as required.
Wear a company issued uniform during Commuter Service duties.
Report to assigned work location within a 2‑hour timeframe.
Practice safe work habits.
Preferred Qualifications
Experience working with or around moving heavy equipment.
Experience working outdoors in variable weather conditions.
Completion of a Railroad Conductor Training Course or Program.
Additional Information
All individuals in train service are subject to random drug testing as required by federal law, conducted during duty hours when selected by computer.
This is a Union position. Actual earnings are governed by the collective bargaining agreement, including a monthly guarantee and daily rates, which may result in higher total compensation than the hourly range shown.
