Job Summary
Leonardo DRS NPS has a need for a Mechanical Engineer II experienced in acoustic design and analysis of high-performance rotating equipment and associated static structures. Engineering should have the intent to become an acoustic subject matter expert. The individual will provide direct contribution to acoustic design performance and guidance consideration for multiple product lines. This role will develop related design analysis documentation to satisfy customer deliverables and provide updates to management for budget and schedule.

The ideal candidate is an individual possessing strong mechanical engineering technical skills, knowledge of airborne and structure-borne acoustic analysis, and an understanding of the design considerations for electrical equipment.

What You Will Do

Support acoustic data testing collection and evaluation

Work as a member of a product development team to complete project deliverables on schedule with a critical focus on accuracy and completeness

Demonstrate creativity, energy, and the ability to plan, manage, and communicate progress on design assignments

Execute acoustic analysis on electrical power electronic equipment, including:

Structure Borne Noise

Airborne Noise

Narrow Band and Octave Analysis

Transmission Paths

Mitigation Methods

Apply knowledge of packaging and mechanical design of power electronics assemblies to effectively and efficiently design, troubleshoot, and validate the mechanical aspects of a product from a component up to the system level

Define mechanical interface requirements between system and subsystems

Generate accurate analysis and design reports for the system and subsystems of complex assemblies to effectively document and communicate the design to internal and external customers

Analyze and comprehend product and MIL specifications to ensure product and project compliance; support development and use requirements and a requirements traceability matrix (RTM) to drive design efforts

Independently develop and implement corrective actions to successfully execute the projects while following process requirements

Communicate design direction and interface with suppliers and team members on system issues and assist in the decision-making process for the program

Provide accurate cost, schedule and technical compliance updates to project management as assigned

Work effectively in a multi-disciplinary team environment and provide technical leadership on large projects

Education & Experience Requirements

Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent technical field required

3+ years experience in mechanical design and packaging of power electronics (variable frequency drives, electronic breakers, switchboards); evaluating acoustic performance

Experience with Navy applications and market is a plus

Experience with Finite Element and Statistical Energy Analyses

Experience in execution of acoustic testing and model validation, including sound intensity, modal analysis, and data acquisition with instrumentation such as accelerometers, microphones, and strain gauges

Additional Desirable Qualifications, Skills and Knowledge

Familiarity with data acquisition systems for acoustic testing and digital signal processing

Experience in analyzing mechanical designs for structural integrity through static and dynamic analysis

Experience in the use of Ansys for structural analysis desired

Experience in NX as CAD tool a desire

Design experience with metal-enclosed switchgear and electronic power conversion products

Design experience with MIL standards or for US NAVY applications

Experience with execution of projects for the US military

Detail oriented, highly organized, and able to ensure multiple assignments are completed properly and on time

Able to effectively multi-task and handle changing work assignments, schedules, and priorities

Extensive PC skills in Word, Excel, Power Point, Outlook, Windows, etc.

U.S. Citizenship required. This position may require an active DOD security clearance or the ability to obtain such clearance within a reasonable time after commencement of employment.
