About the Role
We are makers. We create because we are curious, and we believe that the best way to prove an idea works is to make it real.
As the Creative Director, Web, you are the visionary behind Google’s digital front door. You operate at the intersection of brand storytelling and cutting-edge web technology. This is not a role for utility-focused product designers; this is a role for a digital storyteller who understands how to turn a website into an immersive brand experience.
You will drive the creative vision for high-visibility marketing sites, product launch pages, and interactive digital experiences. You are obsessed with pixel perfection, steeped in emerging web trends (WebGL, micro-interactions, motion), and capable of translating the Google brand into digital environments that are as functional as they are magical. You will set the vision, guide the team, and get your hands dirty in the design files to ensure every pixel meets the "Google Grade."
Responsibilities
Web Vision & Digital Storytelling
- The "Flash" & The Function: Lead the creation of "flashy," high-impact marketing websites and digital experiences. You bridge the gap between heavy interaction design and strategic marketing, ensuring the web isn't just a container for information, but a compelling destination in itself.
- User-Centric Magic: Understand the product and the user deeply. Your job is to connect the two through intuitive UI and magical UX that feels distinctly Google—simple, human, and useful, but with a layer of delight that pushes the brand forward.
Craft, Quality & "Google Grade"
- Pixel Obsession: Maintain an uncompromising standard of visual excellence. You are the guardian of "Google Grade" on the web—ensuring hierarchy, typography, and layout are flawless across all viewports.
- Hands-On Leadership: You are a leader who still designs. You must be willing to jump into Figma to refine a component, direct a motion study, or push a concept further. You lead by doing.
- Systemic Thinking: While focused on "wow" moments, you also understand design systems. You ensure your flashy experiences can scale and align with broader Google web governance where necessary.
- Sell the Vision: You are the primary presenter for digital work. You must be able to articulate the "why" behind complex interaction models and design choices to clients across Marketing and Product, turning skeptics into believers.
- Strategic Alignment: Partner with strategists to ensure web experiences meet business KPIs without sacrificing creativity. You know how to balance "cool" with "conversion."
- AI-Enabled Workflow: actively explore how AI can enhance web design workflows—from generating layout variations to creating assets for prototypes. You view AI as a tool to get to "pixel perfect" faster.
About You
The essentials
- Experience: 10+ years of digital design experience, with a heavy emphasis on marketing websites, microsites, and interactive storytelling. At least 3+ years in a leadership role.
- Portfolio of "Wow": A portfolio demonstrating high-end web design (Awwwards-caliber work). We need to see rich UI, fluid UX, and strong motion sensibilities—not just static dashboards or utility apps.
- Technical Fluency: Deep expertise in UI/UX principles and site architecture. You don't need to write code, but you must understand the capabilities of modern front-end development (HTML/CSS/JS/WebGL) to communicate effectively with developers.
- Tool Mastery: Expert-level proficiency in Figma and familiarity with the Adobe Creative Suite. Knowledge of prototyping tools (Protopie, Principle) is a massive plus.
- Client Presence: Proven ability to command a room and present creative work with confidence and strategic clarity.
- The Maker Mindset: You are resilient, curious, and believe that the details are the design.
Key Performance Indicators (KPIs)
- Creative Excellence: Delivering web work that sets a new standard for the brand and garners industry recognition (FWA, Awwwards, Webby).
- Engagement: Web experiences that drive higher dwell time, interaction rates, and successfully convey product magic.
- Team Leadership: Cultivating a team of designers who are excited to push boundaries and grow their skills under your mentorship.
- Client Trust: establishing yourself as the go-to expert for digital web innovation within the client organization.
