Job Description – Instrumental Music Teacher/Assistant Band Director
Reports to:
Principal of DHS and DMS
FLSA Status:
Exempt

To guide students to achieve musical expression and understanding
Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree or higher from an accredited college or university.
Valid Alabama teaching certificate in the grade level, subject area(s) assigned.
Ability to meet suitability criteria for employment and/or certification/licensure under the Alabama Child Protection Act of 1999 and Act No. 2002-457.
Demonstrated proficiency in oral and written communication skills.
Ability to be punctual and in regular attendance.
Ability to use technology to communicate, to plan and provide instruction, to facilitate student learning, to manage data, and to produce/submit required reports, correspondence, and/or financial information.
Ability to develop and implement curriculum to the needs of students at the designated grade level(s) and in the designated content area(s)/subject(s).
Effective interpersonal skills, with an emphasis on communication and collaboration with a wide variety of people and groups, for the purpose of maximizing student achievement.
Performance Responsibilities
Assist in developing and implementing a program of instruction based upon the goals and standards of the National Association for Music Education. This includes planning and directing experiences in large performing groups, technical instruction, chamber music, listening and music theory.
Assist in creating a classroom environment that is conducive to learning and appropriate to the maturity and interests of all students.
Assist in developing an appropriate and justifiable system for evaluation and grading of students.
Assist in preparing the marching band and other instrumental groups for appropriate public performances in keeping with the expectations of the school, principals and community.
Stress and exemplify good citizenship.
Assist in organizing and disciplining students at a high-level during classes and at public events.
Assist in preparing and distributing materials that inform students and their parents the grade requirements and band policies, i.e. handbooks or printed handouts.
Assist in assuming responsibility for coordinating all auxiliary or adjunct groups which perform with the band.
Work with the principals and band director in developing a program budget.
Follow proper purchasing procedures.
Work, under supervision of the principals and band director, to raise necessary funds for financing the program, soliciting and organizing parental and community assistance where deemed necessary and advisable.
Assist in insuring proper maintenance and use of instrumental music facilities.
Assist in insuring proper inventory, use and maintenance of supplies, materials and equipment.
Strive to maintain good relations between the instrumental music department and the remainder of the school. Attend faculty meetings and other school functions.
Strive to maintain a professional and ethical image in all associations and circumstances with other directors, adjudicators, school personnel, etc.
Strive to maintain and improve professional competence.
Participate in professional learning opportunities and clinics.
Maintain the highest possible standards for the instrumental music program.
Maintain an intense and continuing interest in the welfare, safety and all-around development of each student.
Insure fair and impartial treatment of all students in the instrumental music program.
Assist in conducting field trips and outside of school activities in accordance with Board Policies.
Strive to maintain good community relations.
Strive to maintain good relations with related organizations such as the cheerleaders, athletic and booster clubs.
Assist in publishing and distributing a calendar of band events that coordinate with all other school events.
Physical Requirements
Employee must occasionally lift, push, pull, carry and/or move up to 50 pounds.
Terms of Employment
Ten‑month employee, in accordance with the Board approved salary schedule. Work schedule includes a 40‑hour work week, with scheduled days and times up to the supervisor.
Evaluation
Performance of this job will be evaluated in accordance with provisions of the State Department of Education and/or Demopolis City Board of Education policy on evaluation of personnel.
