Director of Public Communications - Overview

The Broward County Board of County Commissioners is seeking a Director of Public Communications to serve as the County's chief spokesperson and communications strategist. The role reports directly to the County Administrator and directs all operations of the Office of Public Communications.

Responsibilities

  • Direct operations of the Office of Public Communications, including Public Information, Call Center, and Print Shop; formulate and implement strategies to promote transparency and enhance digital presence.
  • Drive enterprise‑wide communication programs related to change management and raise public awareness of county programs and services.
  • Develop and execute the county’s strategic communications plans; craft high‑level communications for management and elected officials across all platforms.
  • Oversee quality assurance of marketing and communications activities of other county agencies; manage employee communications and media relations.
  • Manage the Advantage Marketing Program, leveraging public and private partnerships to expand educational outreach, reduce program costs, and generate new revenue streams.
  • Identify fiscal and capital improvement needs and direct activities to fund and implement them.
  • Perform related work as assigned.

Qualifications

  • Strong strategic mindset and ability to develop breakthrough communications strategies.
  • Demonstrated experience directing enterprise‑wide communication programs in complex, multi‑stakeholder organizations.
  • Excellent skill in crafting high‑level, sensitive communications for executive leadership and elected officials.
  • Deep expertise in media relations, public information, and crisis communications.
  • Proven ability to balance multiple stakeholder needs while maintaining high ethical standards and cross‑cultural sensitivity.
  • Resourceful and creative in deploying resources effectively within constrained environments.
  • Strong leadership and team‑building skills with experience inspiring and motivating staff across multiple functional areas.
  • Experience with digital communications, social media strategy, and website management.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills tailored to diverse audiences.
  • Ability to develop, implement, and manage strategic, fiscal, and capital improvement plans.

Education & Experience

Bachelor’s degree in journalism, communications, marketing, public relations, or a closely related field. Minimum ten years of high‑level experience in journalism, communications, marketing, or public relations, including strategic and supervisory responsibilities.

Compensation & Benefits

Annual salary range: $144,904.22 to $231,266.72.
