U.S. Catholic is seeking a full‑time Assistant Editor who is extremely detail oriented, creative, energetic, and able to meet tight deadlines. The candidate must be a clear communicator and able to manage multiple tasks at a time.

Job requirements: This is a hybrid position that requires working in our Chicago office 2 days per week and remotely 3 days per week. The assistant editor is a vital part of the editorial team for U.S. Catholic and provides editorial, digital media and administrative support, including the following:

Print Magazine Production

Collaborate with the editorial team to keep the monthly production schedule on track and prepare for, and actively participate in, staff meetings.

Assist with writing copy, including headlines and deks, with the capacity to expand into writing print and web articles as needed.

Support print departments such as letters to the editor and art reflections, and coordinate with outside vendors to secure book review copies and image permissions.

Develop content ideas, commission articles, and maintain relationships with authors and columnists.

Digital Media Support

Assist with posting articles to the website, executing email campaigns, and social media posting.

Update archival articles to conform to SEO best practices.

Upload and post video and/or audio files as needed.

Administrative Support

Process invoices, run financial reports, and liaise with the accounting department.

Collaborate with other departments on editorial and marketing projects, including marketing/ad sales, the broader communications team, and development.

Schedule meetings, process mail, review unsolicited submissions for acceptance, and provide general office support.

Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in English, communications, journalism, or equivalent experience.

Knowledge of the Catholic faith and experience working in journalism.

1–2 years of copyediting experience.

1–2 years of editorial experience.

Experience with desktop software (Adobe Creative Suite) and web production tools (WordPress) preferred.

Comfortable using social media.

Strong Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook skills required.

Experience editing video or audio—or a willingness to learn—is preferred.
