Responsibilities
As a Perishable Representative, you are responsible for providing a well‑stocked and well‑maintained department while delivering superior customer service. You will prepare, package, and merchandise fresh product on a daily basis, while maintaining all department and food safety/sanitation standards.
Key Responsibilities & Essential Functions
Customer Service:
Provide superior customer service. Take orders from customers by telephone or in person. Answer customer questions regarding products and assist them with selections.
Food Service:
Prepare, package, and merchandise fresh product. Slice, package, label, and rotate products. Scan items on Telxon for production. Assist in technical areas as needed.
Sales:
Merchandise product effectively. Use suggestive‑selling techniques to meet customer needs and build department sales. Make regular announcements related to freshly‑produced items to increase sales.
Food Safety / Sanitation:
Clean and sanitize display cases; properly operate and maintain equipment. Comply with H‑E‑B food safety and sanitation standards. Follow departmental SOPs and store operating procedures.
Additional Department‑Specific Responsibilities
Aguas:
Peel, cut, and chop fresh fruits and vegetables. Prepare fresh specialty drinks and food products specific to the Aguas department.
Floral:
Design floral arrangements; provide a variety of fresh, quality products. Design and execute merchandising programs. Track seasonal records when appropriate.
Market:
Cut, trim, and prepare meat for service at the meat counter and self‑service counter. Ensure proper product rotation and storage. Maintain coolers and freezers. Weigh, price, and package selections. Operate power meat‑prep and process equipment. Produce: stock and rotate product to ensure freshness. Assist floral department when needed. Communicate product knowledge to customers by explaining and providing samples. Cut, wrap, and price produce for sale floor placement. Maintain the signing program.
Seafood:
Be knowledgeable about various fish and shellfish. Weigh, price, and package selections. Maintain coolers and freezers.
Qualifications & Key Requirements
Age Requirement: 18+.
Work Experience: Knowledge/skills/abilities in customer service and communication.
Required computer‑systems knowledge (Telxon, ACR, label machine).
Required strong customer‑service skills.
Required communication and interpersonal skills.
Required reading and writing skills.
Required planning and organizing skills.
Required education: HS diploma or GED (or equivalent).
Required licenses/certifications: Completion of company orientation and safety training.
Physical Demands & Working Conditions
Function in a fast‑paced, retail environment. Work with customers, staying attentive to their needs.
Constantly reach at waist.
Frequently stand, walk, pivot, push/pull with arms, grasp, and perform cervical flexion.
Frequently be exposed to wet, cold conditions.
Occasionally reach overhead, shoulder, knee, floor; bend, stoop, squat, crouch, kneel, stair‑climb, twist, pinch, perform fine‑motor movements.
Occasionally be exposed to hot conditions, ambient temperatures, loud noise.
Demonstrate the ability to lift 90 lbs (market) or 50 lbs (seafood) and manage in excess of those limits.
Physical‑demand measurements: Constantly 5.5+ hours per 8‑hour day; Frequently 2.5 hours per 8‑hour day; Occasionally 0.
