Overview

Argonne National Laboratory is seeking a Deputy Senior Director for the Infrastructure Services (IS) division. The Deputy works with the Senior Director of Infrastructure Services to lead, coordinate, and manage multiple operations functions including nuclear and non‑nuclear facilities, utilities, nuclear waste, site services, and project management.
Responsibilities

Execute strategic direction, achieve organizational maturity, identify and manage risk, and make data‑driven decisions.
Implement the long‑term infrastructure investment strategy and support project strategy to maximize efficient use of campus facilities, enabling the laboratory’s science objectives.
Ensure facilities, nuclear waste management, and operational performance align with the laboratory’s mission and strategic vision.
Build and maintain relationships with the Department of Energy and external institutions to promote continuous improvement, benchmarking, and operational efficiencies.
Drive a data‑ and risk‑based decision‑making culture to prioritize investment and support overall site resiliency.
Provide line management for central shops, site services, and facilities organizations; oversee teams that operate and maintain facilities, deliver custom manufacturing services, maintain grounds and roadways, and manage shipping/receiving of materials.
Develop, implement, and monitor all facilities budgets—including operations, maintenance, and capital projects—ensuring cost‑effective and transparent service delivery.
Foster effective communication and collaboration within the directorate and advocate for high quality, innovative programs to attract, develop, motivate, and retain a diverse workforce.
Facilitate communication between Laboratory Operations Directorates—safety, financial, information technology, security, and other operational functions—to grow collaboration.
Engage with science and technology directorates to develop an infrastructure services strategy that supports program science needs.
Ensure all facilities and programs comply with regulations and management expectations.
Serve as the IS Directorate Operations Officer, similar to a COO, supporting tactical engagement and operations with operational authority.
Provide emergency response support as directed by the IS Senior Director.
Qualifications

Experience in project management, site services, facilities, nuclear operations, or related areas.
Comprehensive leadership and management skills to implement strategic infrastructure and campus plans.
Ability to build consensus among key stakeholders and lead multidisciplinary teams.
Hands‑on leadership of technical teams with guidance on execution discipline and operations.
Experience managing large‑scale change initiatives and driving cultural change.
Ability to develop strategies to attract, develop, and retain a high‑performing diverse staff.
Skill to conceptualize, launch, and deliver multiple projects, programs, and initiatives on time and within budget.
Organizational skills and ability to manage central resources, applications, and coordinate initiatives.
Strong communication skills for presenting technical issues to senior leadership.
Experience as a leader in a Department of Energy national laboratory or other federal government environment (desired).
Experience managing projects over $1million in scope (desired).
Must be a U.S. citizen and able to obtain and maintain a security clearance.

Additional Information

The expected hiring range for this position is $221,934.00 – $346,217.04, but the final salary will be based on qualifications and other factors. Comprehensive benefits are part of the total rewards package. This is a full‑time, regular time position.
