Assistant Director of Bands
The University of Maryland School of Music seeks a dynamic, creative, collaborative, and dedicated conductor-educator to serve as Assistant Director of Bands.
Qualifications
Genuine enjoyment and appreciation for athletic bands and working with non‑music majors.
Strong musicianship.
Multiple successful years of teaching marching band.
Experience working with collegiate athletic bands.
Strong communication, planning, and organizing skills.
Experience writing drill and music arrangements for athletic bands.
Administrative and organizational experience, including coordinating logistics of ensemble travel.
Knowledge of current trends in pedagogy and repertoire programming for instrumental ensembles.
Preferred: Experience arranging music for marching band.
Preferred: Experience providing student leadership training.
Preferred: Experience teaching marching band pedagogy.
Preferred: Experience designing halftime shows for college football audiences.
Preferred: Experience working with outdoor sound amplification and recording.
Preferred: Successful secondary teaching background.
Preferred: Demonstrated excellence in marching band, wind conducting, ensemble performance, or other creative activity.
Preferred: Evidence of potential for scholarly/creative contributions to the profession.
Preferred: Demonstrated success recruiting students at the collegiate level.
Preferred: Demonstrated commitment to and/or success in working with a wide range of populations on campus and in the community.
Responsibilities
Assist in the teaching and administration of the UMD Athletic Band program that includes 5 total instructional staff.
Co‑teach the “Mighty Sound of Maryland” Marching Band.
Lead the instruction and administration of the Maryland Pep Band (fall and spring semesters).
Conduct the University Band (fall and spring semesters).
Teach the Marching Band Pedagogy.
Recruit students to the athletic band program.
Undertake additional possible assignments based on the successful candidate’s secondary skills and program needs.
Serve to the department as assigned.
Minimum Requirements
Master of Music degree in wind conducting or a closely related field at the time of application.
Three years of successful teaching experience at the university, community college, and/or high school level with a significant marching band component.
