Our HNTB Minnesota team is growing! We are seeking a dynamic, engaging leader to join our team as a Design Group Director over our structures, roadway, and transit teams. The position entails leading a multi‑discipline group in the design, development, and delivery of project tasks while managing scope, budget, and quality control. The Group Director oversees department financial metrics to ensure adherence to the group’s goals and alignment with office expectations. Together with office and division leadership the Director applies the firm’s strategic sales and planning approaches, assists with project pursuits and proposals, coordinates project priorities, staffing schedules, and staff assignments, and provides technical coaching and mentoring to staff.
What You'll Do
- Direct and supervise the development and management of the operating budgets for the departments within the Group and coordinate with the office's budget.
- Oversee group activities, establish priorities, and assign staff to projects; collaborate with other groups, offices and divisions on work‑sharing needs and opportunities.
- Drive the implementation of the firm's strategic plan and HNTB's Sophisticated Sales Approach (SSA) on project pursuits and markets, including the development of strategic planning strategies.
- Drive the implementation of the firm's contracting (SCA) process through project delivery and contracting activities, including scope, work plan and fee reviews for all contracting activities impacting the group.
- Drive the implementation of the firm's project delivery (SDA) process, including work planning, monthly project reviews and other performance methods to ensure quality work on time and on schedule to the client's satisfaction.
- Assist in marketing responsibilities, including client discovery, proposal generation, interviews, and win‑to‑work activities.
- Maintain client contacts to ensure satisfaction; lead and assist in sales and marketing efforts for department growth.
- Assist in the development and execution of the office strategic plan; may participate in the Office Leadership Team (OLT).
- Recruit, hire, develop and retain department staff within the group, including supporting managers with plans for reporting, performance and compensation reviews, and succession planning.
- Manage assigned project management activities (scope, schedule, budget and quality) and perform technical discipline tasks such as research, reports, design, specifications and plan preparation.
- Lead the group, supervising directly and indirectly at least 25 but typically 35‑40 or more employees.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
What You'll Need
- Bachelor's degree in engineering with 12 years of practical experience, including 4 years of supervisory experience.
What We Prefer
- Master's degree.
- 20 years practical experience.
- 6 years supervisory experience.
- Professional Engineer (PE) certification.
- Project Management Professional (PMP).
- Other professional certifications such as American Institute of Certified Planners (AICP) or SAVE International Certified Value Specialist (CVS).

The approximate pay range for Minnesota is $189,626.70 – $302,910.19. The approximate nationwide pay range is $180,596.86 – $360,607.36.
