Editor & Senior Writer, Marketing & Communication
Gustavus Adolphus College invites applications for an experienced Editor & Senior Writer to join the Marketing & Communications team as a full‑time, exempt position. The role is central to advancing the College’s goals in student enrollment, alumni and donor engagement, and community visibility.
Job Summary
Reporting to the Chief Communications Officer, the Editor & Senior Writer serves as the editorial lead for Gustavus.edu and The Gustavus Quarterly Magazine. The role generates compelling, on‑brand content that reflects campus life, academic achievement, and the broader Gustavus story, aligning editorial output with institutional priorities across all media channels.
Web & Digital Content
Own and manage editorial content for the College’s primary marketing platform, Gustavus.edu.
Upload and maintain news articles, press releases, and general web content using the College’s content management system.
Monitor website user experience and recommend improvements to serve key audience segments effectively.
Ensure all web content meets accessibility standards.
Magazine & Print Publications
Serve as managing editor of The Gustavus Quarterly, overseeing the publication from concept through final production.
Ideate, assign, write, edit, and proof content; collaborate with designers, photographers, and other creative partners.
Maintain and evolve editorial themes that reflect the Gustavus brand and institutional priorities.
Writing, Editing & Storytelling
Identify and develop compelling feature stories, campus news, and profiles that resonate with prospective students, alumni, donors, and the broader community.
Conduct interviews with faculty, staff, students, alumni, and subject matter experts.
Provide writing, editing, and proofreading support across the Marketing and Communications team.
Assess photo, video, and graphic needs to enhance storytelling across both digital and print platforms.
Strategy & Collaboration
Oversee the editorial content calendar for both the website and magazine.
Partner with the broader Marketing and Communications team to ensure brand consistency and message alignment across all channels.
Field and assess content requests for web pages and other communications projects.
Actively contribute to a collaborative, high‑performing team culture built on excellence and accountability.
Perform other duties as assigned.
Prerequisites / Minimum Qualifications
Education:
Bachelor’s degree in journalism, English, marketing, public relations, strategic communications, or a related field.
Experience:
Minimum of 7‑10 years of professional experience in writing, editing, or content strategy.
Writing:
Strong command of AP style; demonstrated ability to write for multiple audiences and formats.
Web/CMS:
Hands‑on experience with content management systems such as Drupal or WordPress.
Software:
Proficiency in Google Workspace and/or Microsoft Office (Word, PowerPoint, Excel).
Storytelling:
Proven ability to craft emotionally resonant narratives and adapt content for short‑ and long‑form formats, including social media.
Project Management:
Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple projects, meet deadlines, and work independently in a fast‑paced environment.
Collaboration:
Excellent interpersonal and communication skills; experience working cross‑functionally with creative and communications teams.
Preferred Qualifications
Photography & Videography:
Experience capturing and editing high‑quality images and video in varied environments.
Brand & Marketing Acumen:
Familiarity with how editorial content supports broader marketing objectives, executive communications, and brand strategy.
Higher Education:
Prior experience in a college, university, or nonprofit communications environment is a plus.
