Job Summary

Our Senior Medical Writers work as part of a multidisciplinary team (including medical director, editor, graphic designers, and account personnel) to produce slide decks, infographics, web-based and social media materials, meeting reports, strategic communications platforms, medical publications, and other materials requiring sound clinical judgment and excellent writing skills. Senior Medical Writers work on multiple projects simultaneously and manage their workload under strict timelines. They are responsible for developing content that supports therapeutic areas & product positioning of pharmaceutical, biotech & medical device clients. Level of experience and ability to effectively partner with medical directors to create efficiencies justifies the senior role.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

Participating as an active team member in providing strategic recommendations and contributing to continuous quality improvement

Developing high-quality written materials that are scientifically accurate, fully referenced, appropriate to the target audience, and that meet the authors’ communication objectives and client specifications

Consulting with creative, medical, and varying internal teams to conceptualize and develop images, diagrams, animations, or interactive assets for assigned projects and/or new business pitches

Being an active participant in and leading client meetings for assigned teams, providing strategic input and collaborating with medical directors and account leads

Providing onsite support for activities such as advisory board meetings, symposia, and medical congresses

Interacting with key experts to solicit their input, facilitate alignment, resolve queries, and make constructive suggestions about content

Researching medical and scientific topics using relevant information sources; annotating those sources while writing

Developing and maintaining in-depth knowledge in relevant therapy areas including disease state, treatment guidelines, drug mechanisms of action, product efficacy and safety profile, and competitive landscape

Providing mentoring/training to more junior-level writers

Representing OPEN Health at selected congresses and society and client meetings as needed

Assisting in the development of project proposals and other new business development initiatives as needed (eg, background, lit searches, faculty recommendations, biography updates, etc.)

Being cognizant of team/company expectations in terms of budgeted hours, deadlines, and other goals and communicating with team regarding these as needed

Following standard operating procedures (SOPs), including updating of project files, following sign-off procedures, and version‑control conventions

What you’ll bring:

MD, PharmD, or PhD strongly preferred

5+ years of experience with a medical communications agency, or equivalent

Strong scientific background and enjoy communicating complex scientific ideas in a clear, accurate, and innovative way

Pride in producing high‑quality medical content with support from a strong team

Desire to be in a dynamic role involving mentally stimulating assignments and direct interaction with clients and scientific experts

Openness to accept constructive feedback from the medical director, authors, and clients and implement it across your projects

Experience synthesizing and interpreting data from multiple sources

Ability to perform medical literature searches and produce high‑quality medical content development

Aptitude for the English language and excellent written and verbal communication skills

Willingness and ability to work both independently and in a team structure

Flexibility to effectively work across multiple therapeutic areas

High comfort level interacting with clients and authors/thought leaders

Ability to manage multiple and sometimes competing challenges, issues, and priorities with the ability to delegate, problem‑solve, and set clear expectations

Enthusiasm, team‑player attitude, self‑motivation, and professional demeanor

Proficiency performing PubMed searches and using MS365 programs including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, and Teams.
