How You’ll Help Transform Healthcare

This hybrid position combines onsite and remote work and involves working closely with Foundation leadership and development officers to advance Carilion Clinic Foundation’s mission of improving health and transforming lives through philanthropy. The Communications Consultant will develop and execute communication strategies that elevate the Foundation’s visibility, strengthen donor engagement, and support fundraising initiatives through donor‑centered, advancement‑focused writing and integrated communication plans.
Responsibilities

Steer donors through strategic written communications that illustrate donor intent, philanthropic impact, and investment outcomes.
Partner with major and principal gift officers to create donor‑facing materials such as proposals, stewardship communications, and campaign narratives.
Produce the annual Foundation Impact Report as a cornerstone stewardship and advancement tool.
Update and manage the Foundation website, adding purposeful donor‑focused stories.
Collaborate with Marketing and Communications to integrate philanthropy messages across Carilion Clinic’s social media and public communications.
Build the image of Carilion Clinic as a not‑for‑profit organization through advancement‑aligned storytelling.
Lead and participate in multidisciplinary projects, monitoring timelines and deliverables.
Serve as the primary contact for vendors and internal leadership regarding project needs and service expectations.
Use consulting and change‑management processes to evaluate outcomes and recommend improvements.
Preferred Experience

Experience in advancement, development, or fundraising communications.
Background writing for healthcare foundations, higher education, or academic medicine audiences.
Direct collaboration with major or principal gift officers.
Required Qualifications

Education

Bachelor’s degree required; 4 years of relevant experience may substitute for a degree.
Experience

Minimum five years of related experience, including at least three years in a specialized marketing or communications function.
Skills and Abilities

Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including presentation abilities.
Strong analytical thinking and interpersonal skills.
Ability to manage multiple tasks and projects, adapt to changing priorities, and work effectively in a team.
Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications.
Maintaining confidentiality and handling sensitive information appropriately.
Broad knowledge across marketing and communications areas with advanced expertise in one or two disciplines.
