The Scots Language Centre seeks a director to be the strategic and operational leader of the Centre.

About the Scots Language Centre

The Scots Language Centre is a publicly funded organisation dedicated to supporting and promoting the Scots language, its culture, and its speakers. The Centre provides information about the Scots language, encourages its use through a programme of online activities, develops educational material for use in schools and other learning situations, and works in partnership with government as well as educational, cultural and language organisations.

About the Role

You will work closely with the Board of Trustees, our Treasurer, education and information officers, and external contractors to develop the most impactful programme of online and offline activities. You will be the public face of the Centre and should feel confident about meeting and working with policy makers, journalists, broadcasters, community groups, and artists and creatives.

What you’ll do

  • Shape and deliver an inspiring long‑term strategy
  • Ensure high quality and effective delivery of all programmes and services
  • Lead organisational development, culture, and team wellbeing
  • Work in partnership with the Treasurer to deliver financial sustainability through strong budgeting, fundraising, and income generation
  • Build and nurture partnerships across education, cultural and public sectors
  • Act as a compelling ambassador for the Scots language
  • Work collaboratively with the Board to ensure excellent governance and accountability

About You

  • Passionate about the Scots language and its dialects
  • A Scots speaker
  • Strategic, forward‑thinking, and able to turn ideas into action
  • Skilled in financial management and organisational leadership
  • An excellent communicator who can inspire confidence and build strong relationships
  • Experienced in leading teams and fostering a positive, inclusive culture
  • Comfortable representing the organisation publicly and advocating for its mission

Experience in language promotion, and / or the education, or creative sectors is desirable but not essential — what matters most is your ability to lead with integrity, purpose and a love for the Scots language and the communities that use it.
