Position Description
The successful candidate for this position will be a 1099 contractor with Music Ministry International and will serve as the Music Director/Musician/Accompanist for Catholic Mass and Worship Services.
Scope of Responsibilities
- Provide musical accompaniment for Catholic Masses and the associated rehearsals at McConnell Air Force Base, coordinating with the Wing Chaplain, Catholic Priest, and volunteer musicians.
- Administer the Catholic music program, lead and equip a team of volunteer musicians, vocalists, and AV technicians to deliver a comprehensive Catholic music program.
Qualifications
- Minimum of two years' experience playing music in a tradition comparable to a Catholic Mass/Worship service.
- Ability to sight read music.
- Proficiency in piano (preferably organ) and/or other relevant instruments.
- Knowledge of choral harmony.
- Musical proficiency to accompany a volunteer cantor and/or choir for congregational singing of hymns, choruses, and praise songs.
- Ability to play a wide range of musical selections.
- Ability to play hymns from the chapel hymnal and the current Catholic Missalette.
- Willingness to work with chapel staff and volunteers of all religious backgrounds.
- Knowledge of Catholic teachings, customs, and traditions.
- Understanding of the order, function, and intent of worship at Sunday worship and special services.
- Maintain professionalism, discipline, and respect for religious beliefs of all faiths.
- Fluent in reading, writing, and speaking English.
- Provide a resume supporting qualifications.
- Adhere to direction of the Catholic Priest and cooperate with volunteers.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Provide services at the Base Chapel or alternate location on McConnell Air Force Base.
- Play and lead music at the direction of the Catholic Priest for contracted Catholic Masses and services.
- Coordinate music support requirements for Catholic programs with the Catholic Priest and assigned Chaplains.
- Arrive at least 30 minutes before worship services to rehearse with the choir and coordinate last‑minute details.
- Adapt performances and rehearsals to altered worship content and time changes.
- Custodial responsibility for musical supplies such as songbooks and sheet music; supplies returned upon request.
- Restore performance and rehearsal areas to neat, orderly condition after each event.
- Conserve energy by turning off lights, equipment, etc., before leaving any service, rehearsal, or event.
- Secure the facility when last using it; a facility key is provided.
- Perform 52 weekly Mass/Worship services and 52 rehearsals; up to 18 special events/services and associated rehearsals may be required.
- Maintain a professional, business‑like manner and appearance.
- Receive at least 24‑hour notice of base security initiatives; services postponed due to base closure will be rescheduled when reopening occurs.
- Plan and coordinate music selections with the Catholic Priest at least four days in advance; weekly song selections are provided by MMI every Monday.
- Select hymns and musical selections that meet worship and liturgical needs of each mass celebration.
Period of Performance
- Up to five years.
Hours of Operation
- Mass Sunday at 09:30; rehearsals Wednesday at 18:00 (may be moved).
- Each service and rehearsal is one hour; arrival and set‑up at least 30 minutes prior.
- Additional Masses on Holy Days including Christmas, Easter Vigil, Triduum, Ash Wednesday, etc.; typically one hour except Easter Vigil.
