Overview
Director of Music for Alamance Lutheran Church. Grace to you and peace from God our Father and from the Lord Jesus Christ. The Director of Music is a ministry position of Alamance Lutheran Church, and is under the direction of the Pastor implementing the policy and goals of the congregation. The Director of Music is a steward of all the gifts God has entrusted to Alamance Lutheran Church including volunteers, members, pianos, organ, music, and all other related resources of the parish. The Director of Music’s life and vocation should embody Christian faith, principles, and values.
Purpose of the Position
Plays piano and organ proficiently. Enhances the worship experience at Alamance Lutheran Church providing music for all services and special occasions using the organ, pianos, choirs and instrumental groups. Develops new musical resources within the congregation. Encourages and mentors adults, children and youth who wish to use or develop their musical talents to enhance worship. Recruits outside resources for special events and programs. Ensures organ and pianos are properly maintained. Works with the Pastor and the Worship and Music Committee ensuring musical offerings are aligned with liturgical settings and seasons especially during Advent, Christmas, Lent, and Easter. Provides musical support as needed for midweek services. Is prepared to support funeral services and weddings as needed.
Duties
- Accompanies liturgy and hymns on either piano or organ. Typical music includes a prelude, opening hymn, gospel acclamations, sermon hymn, offertory, closing hymn, and postlude.
- Liturgical settings could dictate more or less musical selections.
- Musical selections are made in consultation with the Pastor on a weekly basis, and receive suggestions from the Worship and Music Committee on a monthly or seasonal basis.
- Arranges special musical events on a periodic basis.
- Plans for special events are made in consultation with the Pastor and the Worship and Music Committee ideally on an annual basis.
- Develops musical resources within the Congregation. Includes solo performances, duos, trios, instrumentalists, and choirs.
- Accompanies and leads soloists and choirs.
- Provides innovative new approaches to musical offerings.
- Ensures equipment is maintained and in good repair.
- Recommends necessary maintenance and repairs to the Pastor before authorizing repairs.
- Maintains a music library and musical instruments.
- Arranges for a substitute when they need to be away. Provides timely notification to the Pastor when they will be away.
- Vacations will not be planned to occur on Easter, Pentecost, Reformation, and Christmas.
Supervision
The Pastor is the primary supervisor. Works with the Worship and Music Committee, attending Worship and Music Committee meetings on a regular basis. Staff Support Committee will provide consultation and support as needed at the request of the Director of Music. Will meet with Staff Support Committee at least annually.
Qualifications
- Demonstrated proficiency on piano and organ.
- Formal experience is desired.
- Have diverse musical and choral skills.
- Be a strong team player with the staff and congregation while exhibiting a positive attitude.
- Committed to the Alamance Lutheran Church’s vision, leadership, and people.
- Is dependable, responsible, self-motivated and creative.
Salary and Benefits
Will be determined as part of the annual budgeting process. An annual review will be performed by the pastor with the chairs of the Worship and Music and Staff Support Committees. Will have nine days of paid leave annually. Four days will include Sundays. Cancellations because of inclement weather do not impact nor count toward paid leave days.
Probation
A new employee will be on probation for the first 90 days of employment. If either party determines the relationship between the Pastor and Worship and Music Committee is not a viable fit for Alamance Lutheran Church or the Director of Music, termination can be granted immediately. After 90 days of employment, Alamance Lutheran Church requests a 60-day termination notice.
