Job Description:

NOTE: This role is based in New York City and encourages a minimum of two days per week in the SoHo office. Some roles or teams may require additional in-office attendance if the essential functions of the role require it.

THE OPPORTUNITY

Editor of Scholastic News 1 for first graders.

The Editor will create engaging, age-appropriate articles and teaching resources for first-grade classrooms nationwide.

RESPONSIBILITIES

Concept and write delightful, engaging nonfiction articles aligned with first-grade teaching standards.

Accountable for all print and digital assets, ensuring that they are high-quality, classroom ready, and delivered on time.

Understand current grade-level pedagogy and apply it strategically and creatively to the magazine's content.

Collaborate with the Education Editor to ensure that the magazine's content aligns with current educational standards and best practices.

Work with design team to review photos, illustrations, and layouts for each issue

Collaborate with Editorial Director to ensure that the magazine meets the needs of our readers and aligns with our overall business and marketing goals.

Regularly review and strategically incorporate feedback from teacher advisory board and subscribers.

Manage junior staffer, by providing ongoing feedback and performance reviews

Edit copy from junior staffer or freelancers in a clear and timely way

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

Proven ability to write creative, age-appropriate text that will engage young children and support learning goals

Understanding of classroom practices and pedagogy

Ability to meet all deadlines and independently manage print and digital assets according to production schedule

Ability to edit and create teaching resources such as lesson plans, activity pages, video scripts

Skilled at researching articles and interviewing experts

Good visual sense for choosing images and collaborating with Design.

Team player who collaborates well with staff and contributes in meetings

Good communication skills for interacting with teacher customers

Experience and Education:

Professional publishing and editorial experience
