Job Description
The position of Assistant Band Director is designed to support the head director in developing and conducting the band program, leading rehearsals, music instruction, and performing administrative duties. The assistant will help in teaching musical techniques, maintaining student engagement, and supporting performance opportunities.

Essential Functions

Assist the head director with instruction of band members in music theory, performance practices, and repertoire.

Organize and lead individual and small group rehearsal activities as directed.

Assess student musicianship, monitor progress during performance and practice, and report to the head director.

Assist in developing rehearsal and performance schedules.

Supervise students during rehearsals and performances.

Follow established procedures for safety and medical incidents.

Model professional behavior and uphold positive relationships with students, staff, and the community.

Distribute music, equipment, and materials to students as directed.

Comply with district policies, the Arizona Interscholastic Association, and band handbook guidelines.

Ensure the safety of the band in facilities and during events.

Teach safe and effective performance techniques throughout the season.

Promote sportsmanship, ethics, and school pride.

Coordinate transportation and travel logistics for performances.

Adhere to practice and performance schedules, including holidays and off‑season.

Maintain event and travel safety for all participants.

Other Functions

Perform any other duties assigned by the head director, athletic director, principal, or appropriate administrator.

Job Requirements: Minimum Qualifications
Skills, Knowledge and Abilities:

Effective coaching and instruction techniques, knowledge of music performance regulations and strategies, and the ability to establish positive relationships with staff, parents, and students.

Working Conditions & Physical Requirements

Complete NFHS "Fundamentals of Coaching" and "Concussion in Sports" courses and provide certifications before the season.

Hold a valid DPS Fingerprint Card clearance.

Ability to sit and stand for extended periods, using manual dexterity for communication, lifting up to 25 lbs at shoulder height and 50 lbs at waist height, and performing routine mobility tasks.

Working Environment
Work is performed in a school environment and outdoors, with occasional field trips. Noise level is moderate.

Experience
Job‑related experience in music education or band direction preferred.

Education
High school diploma or equivalent.

Certificates & Licenses

Drivers License and evidence of insurability.

NFHS – Fundamentals of Coaching.

Concussion in Sports.

Continuing Education/Training
As needed.

Clearances
I.V.P. Fingerprint Card/Criminal Justice Fingerprint/Background Clearance.

Salary Range
Non‑Exempt – Varies.
