Post Doc - Altizer Lab
The postdoctoral research and teaching associate will conduct research in the Department of Entomology under the mentorship of PI Altizer. Research will leverage existing community science data on monarch butterfly occurrence, host plant distributions, and infection status to understand monarch distribution across North America, with particular focus on the Southeast U.S. The researcher will develop related research questions in collaboration with lab members and seek additional funding. Additional responsibilities include co‑teaching one or more undergraduate Entomology courses, mentoring undergraduate and graduate researchers in the lab, and developing outreach opportunities that engage the community in monarch and pollinator conservation.

Responsibilities

Design and develop research project, assemble, analyze and interpret data focused on monarch butterfly distributions and ecology in the southeastern United States. Data sets include: iNaturalist, JourneyNorth, Monarch Health, Monarch Larva Monitoring Project; analysis of BluMorpho+ solar‑powered tracking data from tags deployed in the southeastern U.S. – 30%

Prepare written and oral communication of research findings. Develop one or more papers for scholarly journals, conference presentations, outreach newsletters, social media and other outlets – 20%

Mentor and train graduate and undergraduate students in research and data analysis methods, developing scientific communication skills, and professional networking – 20%

Assist PI in drafting grant proposals and securing funding for ongoing projects, including applications for postdoctoral fellowships from NSF and other agencies – 10%

Engage in lab‑related activities, including lab meetings, insect husbandry, greenhouse work, organizing supplies, research compliance and ethics – 10%

Co‑teach one or more undergraduate courses, including ENTO 3010: Bees, Beekeeping and Pollinator Conservation. Serve as co‑instructor of record, develop lectures and active learning exercises, assist with student evaluation assignments and exams – 10%

Qualifications

Ph.D. degree in Entomology.

Previous experience working with insects in the field.

Previous experience with data analysis and writing scholarly papers.

Energetic and self‑driven.

Highly motivated, dependable, and teamwork oriented.

Physical Demands

Driving as needed to perform job duties.

Lifting 30 pounds.
