Overview
Otterbein University is an institution that serves the community by preparing graduates to engage locally and globally as they advance their professions and communities. Over 44% of Otterbein students face significant socioeconomic barriers to their success. The VISTA program is housed on campus within the Center for Student Engagement (CSE) where we educate students through hands‑on experiential opportunities. It is integrated with student service organizations, leadership for social change programs, a food pantry and resource center (The Promise House), and a one‑acre community give‑back garden (The Otterbein Community Garden). The Promise House hosts a Cardinal Resource Hub to integrate community resources from various non‑profit and educational sites, bringing together food fairness work, emergency housing, microgrants, strategies for poverty alleviation, food production, nutrition education, financial literacy, and other educational programming.
Duties
Develop a new communications plan to educate potential donors about the specific needs of shoppers at the campus food pantry and thrift shop.
Train a team of peer advocates to assist under‑resourced students as they navigate college and connect with necessary resources to thrive.
Research and design a new resiliency plan for the community garden based on Ohio weather, native plants, pests and pollinators, wildlife, soil health, and crop rotation.
Recruit and train a robust team of student and community volunteers to implement these projects.
