Director - Utility Studies

About the Position As the Director – System Studies, you will be responsible for overseeing and leading the System Studies group within NEI’s Strategic Services department. Your duties focus on management, leadership, and business development, managing project staffing and scheduling, mentoring Team Leads and Engineers, fostering an inclusive environment, and establishing departmental standards and quality measures.
Location & Compensation Remote or Lakewood, CO (Lakewood, CO 80215).
Salary Range: $130,000 - $180,000 per year.
Essential Responsibilities Oversee and manage multiple technical teams
Manage team utilization and forecast workloads based on project sizes and scope
Review and manage financial documentation, including revenue, write‑offs, COGS, overhead expenses, and net income
Develop and implement one‑ and three‑year plans for the department, with quarterly milestones
Lead the interviewing and onboarding process for new team members and leaders within the group
Mentor Team Leads and Engineers across teams
Collaborate with the Business Development team to provide technical guidance, pricing details, and scope alignment
Facilitate a seller‑doer model to maintain existing client relationships and cultivate new ones
Identify the need for and develop processes to enhance efficiency, consistency, and quality of client deliverables
Oversee the production of deliverables across multiple teams, ensuring client satisfaction and timely completion
Develop and enforce Standard Best Practices (SBPs) to ensure high‑level execution across team members
Review the work of engineers, designers, drafters, and field service personnel for quality and accuracy
Maintain a professional understanding of all applicable codes, standards, and construction practices
Assist with client communication and contacts
Perform other duties as assigned
Must Have Qualifications B.S. in Electrical Engineering from an accredited institution; M.S. preferred
5+ years of engineering or relevant field experience
2+ years of engineering management experience
PE licensure preferred
In‑depth knowledge of electrical system studies such as short circuit, load flow/reactive power, harmonics, arc flash, protection/coordination, cable ampacity, grounding/earthing, transient stability, transient overvoltage, and switching
Familiarity with software such as DIgSILENT Power Factory, ETAP, CYMCAP, CDEGS, WinIGS, PSCAD, PSLF, and PSS/e
Experience performing system studies to support renewable energy projects (wind, solar, battery) (Preferred)
Extensive experience producing study or calculation reports
Strong understanding of power system theory including load flow concepts, symmetrical components, and advanced topics such as grounding/earthing, power quality transient analysis, system protection coordination, or transmission system planning
Proficient in Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, Project)
Professional, articulate, and able to exercise independent judgement and discretion
Highly organized and self‑motivated
Excellent written and verbal command of the English language
Authorization to work in the United States full‑time
Proven record of delivering high‑quality work with attention to detail
Demonstrates effective written and oral communication skills
Working Conditions Work environment: office setting, with some field work required
Travel: 10 – 30%
Physical: must be able to lift 25lb.
