Join Idaho Public Television in telling the stories that shape rural America.
Since 1975, Iowa PBS’ Market to Market has been a nationally distributed weekly journal of agriculture and rural affairs. In partnership with Iowa PBS, Idaho Public Television is seeking a creative, mission-driven Producer/Director to research, produce, write, and edit compelling news packages and feature stories that bring policy, people, and local impact to life on screen. The goal? To tell more stories about agriculture and rural life in the Mountain West.
Based in Idaho, the Producer/Director will work with producers, subject matter experts and the Iowa PBS Public Affairs team to create 12 feature stories and 24 news packages annually that resonate with viewers across Idaho and nationwide.
Responsibilities:
What You’ll Do
Produce, direct, write, edit, and deliver news and feature segments for Market to Market
Conduct research, interviews, field production, and script development
Ensure all content meets journalistic, editorial, and regulatory standards (PBS, FCC, IdahoPTV policies, etc.)
Collaborate closely with production teams and provide direction to field and studio crews
Build working knowledge of agriculture, economics, and rural policy issues impacting communities nationwide
Travel across Idaho and the surrounding states; some nights and weekends required
What We’re Looking For
A strong writer and storyteller with a passion for rural issues and public-service journalism
Curious, self-directed, and comfortable learning new technical and subject-matter skills
Organized and able to manage multiple stories and production timelines
Skilled in field production and non-linear editing systems, or able to direct others using them
Comfortable interviewing farmers, policymakers, subject-matter experts, and members of the public
About the Grant
This role is fully grant-funded through June 30, 2028 in support of Market to Market’s ongoing storytelling initiatives.
Minimum Qualifications:
Experience in a professional broadcast and/or video production environment:
Researches original and assigned program proposals
Writes and edits narratives and scripts for all platforms
Organizing and scheduling a media production team in the studio or on remote location
Directs single camera (documentary style) productions with an understanding of studio and remote television productions using multiple cameras
Working within an established budget for television programs and other related platforms and maintaining record of expenses, time, personnel, facilities, and rights for final project report
Operating professional studio and field broadcast and prosumer equipment including field video cameras, field audio equipment, lighting and grip equipment using professional standards
Operates nonlinear editing hardware and software, mass storage for nonlinear uses including video file transcoding
Understands operation of studio equipment such as video switchers
Minimum Qualifications Typically Gained By:
Seven years of full-time professional level experience in multimedia production.
All of the following (a and b):
a. Three years of full-time work experience in broadcast design, commercial art, or multimedia production
b. A total of four years of education and/or full-time experience (as described in part a), where thirty semester hours of accredited college or university coursework in broadcast journalism, mass communications, multimedia, or film equals one year of full-time experience.
All of the following (a, b, and c):
a. One year of full-time work experience in multimedia production
b. A total of four years of education and/or full-time experience (as described in part a), where thirty semester hours of accredited college or university coursework in broadcast journalism, mass communications, multimedia, or film equals one year of full-time experience
c. A total of two years of graduate-level education and/or full-time experience (as described in part a), where twenty-four semester hours of accredited graduate college or university coursework in broadcast journalism, mass communications, multimedia, or film equals one year of full-time experience.
Preferred Qualifications:
Graduation from an accredited four-year college or university with a degree in broadcast journalism, mass communications, multimedia, or film, and experience equal to three years of full-time work in professional-level video production.
Experience with field and/or studio camera work; control room experience helpful but not required
Valid driver's license
