Position Summary:
The City of Inkster is seeking a creative and motivated Social Media Intern to support the City’s digital presence, communications strategy, and community engagement efforts. The intern will assist with managing social media platforms, creating multimedia content, supporting public communication, and promoting City programs, services, events, and initiatives.

Under the direction of the Media Director, this role will play an active part in enhancing the City’s online presence, improving resident engagement, and ensuring timely, accurate, and professional communication with the public. This internship provides hands‑on experience in government communications, social media management, and community relations.

Essential Duties and Job Functions:
Social Media Management:

Assist in managing and maintaining the City’s social media platforms (Facebook, Instagram, etc.)

Schedule and publish posts related to city services, programs, and community events

Monitor comments, messages, and engagement across platforms

Escalate concerns, issues, or sensitive inquiries appropriately

Content Creation & Support:

Assist with video shoots, including setup, recording, and basic editing support

Capture photos and short‑form video content for social media use

Draft captions, announcements, and public information posts

Support development of visual and multimedia content

Community Engagement:

Support responses to residents’ questions and concerns on social platforms

Ensure communication is timely, accurate, and professional

Identify common resident concerns and assist in organizing responsive content

Help maintain a positive and engaging online presence

Event Promotion & Coverage:

Create and publish posts promoting city events, meetings, and initiatives

Assist with real‑time event coverage (photos, short videos, and updates)

Support communication efforts before, during, and after events

Strategy & Intern Projects:

Assist in building and maintaining a structured social media content calendar

Support development of engagement strategies to improve reach and interaction

Identify trends in resident concerns and contribute to communication strategies

Assist with reporting on engagement metrics and performance

Required Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and Minimum Qualifications:

Current college student or recent graduate in Communications, Marketing, Public Relations, Journalism, Graphic Design, or related field preferred

Strong written and verbal communication skills

Familiarity with major social media platforms (Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn, X, etc.)

Experience or interest in photography, videography, or content creation preferred

Basic knowledge of Canva, Adobe, or similar tools preferred

Ability to work independently and meet deadlines

Strong attention to detail and organizational skills

Ability to maintain professionalism when communicating with the public

Interest in government, communications, or community engagement preferred

Requirements include the following:

Availability to work 20‑25 hours per week

Hybrid work schedule (remote and onsite)

Ability to work onsite at a City of Inkster facility as needed (Council Chambers Meeting Room)

Flexibility to attend occasional evening or community events

Reliable and responsive communication

Ability to follow direction and incorporate feedback

Ability to maintain confidentiality when required

Work Environment:

Hybrid work structure (combination of remote and onsite work)

Onsite workspace provided at a City of Inkster facility

Flexible scheduling within agreed weekly hours
