Role Description
The Youth Choir Director is a part-time, on-site role based at St. Andrew’s Lutheran Church in Mahtomedi, MN. This role is responsible for planning and leading regular youth choir rehearsals, selecting age-appropriate and theologically aligned music, and preparing young singers for worship leadership and special services. The Youth Choir Director will collaborate with pastoral staff, worship leaders, and other music ministry team members to integrate youth music into the overall worship life of the congregation. Responsibilities include communicating with parents and caregivers, organizing rehearsal and performance schedules, coordinating accompanists or instrumentalists, and fostering an inclusive, encouraging environment for young people of all musical backgrounds. The role also involves recruiting and welcoming new singers, supporting the spiritual formation of youth through music, and ensuring a safe, respectful rehearsal space.

Qualifications

Demonstrated choral directing skills with youth, including vocal coaching, rehearsal planning, and basic conducting technique.

Solid musicianship, including the ability to read music, select appropriate repertoire, and collaborate effectively with accompanists and other musicians.

Experience working with children and youth in a group setting, with strong skills in encouragement, motivation, and positive behavior management.

Strong organizational and communication skills, including the ability to plan schedules, coordinate with staff and families, and manage details for rehearsals and performances.

Comfort leading music within a Christian worship context and willingness to support the mission and values of St. Andrew’s Lutheran Church.

Ability to create an inclusive, welcoming, and safe environment for young people of diverse backgrounds and musical abilities.

Previous experience in church music, youth ministry, or music education is preferred; relevant degree or coursework in music, music education, or a related field is a plus.

Availability for regular rehearsals, worship services, and special seasonal events (e.g., Advent, Christmas, Holy Week, and other key ministry times).
