Job Summary
Elgin Community College seeks an adjunct instructor to teach our THE150 Theatre Dance. This course provides students with instruction on dance techniques used in the American musical theatre, which includes basic ballet, jazz, tap, and ballroom. The ideal candidate will have a Master’s degree in Theatre, Dance or Musical Theatre with graduate coursework in theatre dance and/or professional dance or choreography experience. The successful candidate is expected to 1) design lessons/units that promote critical thinking through student-content and student-to-student learning activities, 2) foster a supportive learning environment for students by employing evidence-based instructional strategies, and 3) demonstrate commitment to student learning and teaching effectiveness. Preferred applicants will have prior experience teaching.

Required Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

Master’s degree in Theatre, Dance or Musical Theatre with graduate coursework in theatre dance and/or professional dance or choreography experience

Bachelor’s degree and two years professional dance or choreography experience OR two years’ experience teaching dance.

Commitment to the community college mission and philosophy

Commitment to meeting the diverse needs of community students

Preferred Qualifications

Community college teaching experience

Completion of a recognized course design training/certification program

Essential Duties
Deliver Instruction

Conduct assigned classes and/or labs

Prepare lessons

Provide course syllabus (which shall include grading standards, attendance policies, classroom behavioral expectations, course outline and contact information)

Verify student enrollment and submit grade sheets

If a Lab Is Involved

Prepare labs

Enforce lab safety procedures

Evaluate Student Progress

Keep accurate record of student performance

Provide students with timely feedback

Provide Student Assistance

Maintain office hours and voicemail/e-mail communication

Refer students to student support services

Accommodate special needs students

Other Duties
Other duties as assigned that pertain to the job description.
