Mentor A Promise (MAP) is a New York City–based nonprofit organization supporting children and youth ages 5–18 experiencing housing instability through mentorship, literacy, social-emotional learning, educational enrichment, and creative opportunity.
At MAP, storytelling continues long after a camera stops recording or audio is captured.
Editing is where stories are shaped, emotion is refined, and meaning comes into focus.
Within PromiseStudios, editing becomes more than technical work—it becomes storytelling, creative judgment, digital literacy, and artistic expression.

Role Overview
Mentor A Promise is seeking a passionate and collaborative
Editing Teacher
to support students and creative volunteers through engaging, trauma-informed editing education and post-production mentorship.
This role focuses not only on teaching editing fundamentals, but also on helping strengthen and elevate the skills of MAP’s growing creative community.
We are seeking educators who can help editors:
Develop storytelling through editing
Strengthen technical post-production skills
Learn professional workflows
Explore creative editing approaches
Build confidence in visual and audio storytelling
The Editing Teacher works closely with PromiseStudios teams to create learning experiences that are:

Core Responsibilities
Editing Education & Creative Instruction
Teach and support:
Editing fundamentals
Story pacing and rhythm
Scene and sequence construction
Narrative flow and continuity
Audio and visual synchronization
Creative editing techniques
Post-production exercises and projects
Help create engaging and accessible editing learning experiences.
Post-Production & Storytelling Development
Guide and support:
Student editing projects
Short-form and long-form media editing
Narrative and documentary storytelling
Podcast and video post-production
Creative problem-solving
Story shaping and refinement
Help editors understand how emotion, timing, and structure help shape story.
Artist Development & Creative Mentorship
Support:
Developing editors and creative volunteers
Portfolio and reel development
Creative experimentation
Constructive creative feedback
Technical and artistic confidence-building
Individual and collaborative post-production projects
Provide mentorship that strengthens both storytelling and technical growth.
Editing Tools & Industry Learning
Introduce and support learning involving:
Editing software and post-production platforms
Audio and video editing workflows
Media organization and file management
Industry practices and evolving tools
Collaborative editing workflows
Creative post-production systems
Help editors grow through exposure to professional and emerging practices.
Professional Development & Creative Growth
Support a culture of continuous learning by helping:
Expand editing and storytelling skills

Commitment
Volunteer educational and creative role
Approximately
5–10 hours per week
Minimum
6-month commitment required
Remote / hybrid collaboration
US-based volunteers only
Responsive communication through MAP systems
48-hour communication expectation
Participation in MAP onboarding and safeguarding processes
