Reporting to the Prepress Manager, this position mainly involves accurately interpreting and manipulating artwork files to ensure customers can sign‑off on accurate proofs in a timely manner following print specifications for various printing platforms. The role also includes supplying files to production according to scheduling requirements, tooling procurement, and colour management using a large platform of Prepress specific software.
Responsibilities
Technical/Prepress Expertise: responsible for accurate artwork file setup for Flexo, Digital & Hybrid including trapping, color correction, variable data, etc. from customer supplied files. Pre‑flights files to analyze and assess usability. Edit files on Mac computers using Adobe Creative Suite & Esko software. Set up customer proofs following specific printing specifications and liaise with the Prepress Manager or other departments for job‑specific instructions. Perform customer requested changes and file manipulation; some design may be required. Set‑up final stepped files for all print platforms and output final files & proofs accordingly, including rotary, flatbed screens, LEN files, Hi‑res proofs, tooling orders, etc. Participate in regular press proofs with artwork and color adjustments. Contribute to continuous requirements for press fingerprinting and colour profiling for all of RLG's printing platforms. Intermediate+ knowledge of the latest Esko software(s) is an asset.
Tooling/Screen File Preparation and Coordination: set up files for ordering all die cavities, hot stamps, flatbed screens, and films from out‑of‑house suppliers. Create purchase orders and supply accurate tooling files and specifications to meet production deadlines.
Quality Control: participate continuously in the quality assurance program within the Art Process and associated processes, conducting detailed inspections, ensuring adherence to print specifications, and troubleshooting and resolving issues.
Continuous Improvement: regularly contribute to continuous improvement and actively implement new policies and procedures within the department. Create, document, and maintain all Art Dept. standard SOPs, WIs, and forms. Participate in the Art Dept. KPI program.
Equipment Maintenance: ensure all Art Dept. computers, software, printers, etc. are maintained to the highest standards, schedule regular service checks, and manage repairs as needed. Consult with Esko, HP, IT or similar when software issues occur.
Safety and Compliance: uphold all safety protocols and environmental regulations under the Occupational Health Safety Act (OHSA). Conduct regular training sessions on safety practices and ensure team compliance with industry standards.
Interdepartmental Collaboration: work collaboratively with Customers, Sales, Customer Service, Production Planning, Scheduling and Production, sharing information on project timelines and material requirements.
Training: participate in regular and required graphics artist employee training as required.
Special Projects: provide support to any special projects requested and assigned by the Prepress Manager as needed.
Qualifications
Educational Background:
A degree or diploma in Graphics, Printing Technology, or a related field is preferred.
Experience:
At least five years in the print and label industry.
Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, and the ability to resolve issues effectively.
An advanced understanding and use of Esko software (ver.22+) is an asset.
Must understand and have experience in Flexo, Digital, and Hybrid printing.
Must have advanced skills working on a Mac platform with proficiency in the Adobe Creative Suite (specializing in Illustrator and Photoshop, plus additional creative suite software), ArtPro.
Knowledge with EFI Radius ERP would be an asset.
Effective communication skills to understand assigned work and request assistance from co‑workers and the Prepress Manager when required.
Intermediate working knowledge of MS Word, Excel or similar documentation software for some special projects.
Mathematical (measurement) skills are a must.
Analytical ability and creative problem solving / troubleshooting skills are required.
Workflow and Process Improvement considered an asset.
Health and Safety must be an everyday mindset.
Flexibility to work weekends as needed by business requirements.
