Reports to: Director of Education and Director of Devised Theatre.

Ensemble Start Date: June 29, 2026 – End Date: July 25, 2026. Working Location: Onsite, Berkshire community college. Department: Education. Housing available. Schedule: Monday‑Friday 10‑4pm.

Job Overview
The Set Designer will collaborate with the director and students to design, construct, and manage the set and props for the Devised Theatre Ensemble’s 2026 summer production. The role requires a balance of professional design expertise and educational mentorship.

Responsibilities

Act as both a professional designer and teaching artist, guiding students through the conceptualization and realization of the stage environment.

Develop a creative scenic and props design that supports the production’s needs, adheres to the budget, and prioritizes student safety.

Mentor student interns or volunteers, demonstrating the design process and involving them in construction and painting when appropriate.

Lead or supervise the building, painting, and finishing of the set and props, teaching students basic scenic painting techniques such as scumbling, ragging, and stenciling.

Manage the education scenic budget, emphasizing reuse of stock materials and low‑cost creative solutions.

Attend all production meetings and rehearsals, maintaining a close working relationship with the Director and fellow designers to ensure a unified aesthetic.

Ensure all set pieces are structurally sound and safe for student use, and maintain a clean and organized workspace during build and install.

Requirements

Experienced set designer with a recent portfolio.

Experienced educator, able to mentor teens.

Excellent collaboration skills.

Production skills to supervise building of a set.

Qualifications
Strong communication skills and ability to collaborate with coworkers and students are required. A strong interest in education is highly desirable.
