How You Will Make An Impact
You’ll support the operation and maintenance of VELCO’s statewide wireless network and related fiber and microwave backhaul infrastructure. The position participates in network design, planning and integration support functions, such as troubleshooting, analysis, research, debugging and problem solving. The RF Engineer exhibits the talent and skills to make competent recommendations and decisions. With oversight, they will help manage complex technical projects. Strong organizational and time management skills are required to handle the workload and track the various projects going on simultaneously.
Responsibilities
Support the management of VELCO’s trunked radio system, microwave, and optical transport networks.
Follow policies and practices conforming to industry standards to test and certify equipment commissioning, maintenance, and operation.
Help develop end‑user training plans.
Provide engineering and technical support to field personnel operating at radio sites, distribution utilities and substations throughout Vermont.
Monitor and identify radio traffic patterns to ensure high availability. Utilize radio frequency propagation analysis software.
Perform new and repair service requests.
Adhere to FERC and NERC communication‑related standards.
Who You Are
We will be filling this role at the Mid‑career or Senior level. The role requires a background in Tait Technologies products and experience with DMR, MPT‑IP, and conventional systems.
Mid‑Career Engineer (Experienced)
2–7 years of experience with a solid understanding of VELCO radio frequency network system, VELCO standards and procedures, and the ability to competently complete engineering assignments. General oversight from the department manager or more experienced engineers is expected. Proficiency in wireless/Radio Frequency technology for mission‑critical digital mobile communication systems, including trunked radio, DMR and microwave, is required.
BS in Engineering, Engineering Technology or related technical discipline (or equivalent experience).
FCC general class commercial radio operator preferred.
Senior Engineer
More than 7 years of experience with the ability to make competent engineering recommendations and decisions, manage technical projects with minimal oversight, and mentor less experienced engineers. Performs complex network design and planning and integration support functions. Coordinates the technical activities of a telecommunications systems administration support team, including upgrading and disaster recovery plans.
Bachelor of Engineering or Engineering Technology required; Master’s degree or specialized industry credential (e.g., CCNA or CCNP) a plus.
BS in Engineering, Engineering Technology or related technical discipline.
Knowledge / Skills
Digital Mobile Radio experience required.
Tait Technologies experience preferred.
FCC general class commercial radio operator preferred.
Proficiency in planning, designing, implementing and managing carrier‑class statistical (IP) and TDM networking with consideration of traffic loading and bandwidth allocation.
Ability to identify and solve complex problems.
Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
Creative and analytical thinking.
Extremely detail‑oriented and accurate.
Compensation Range
Salary: $68,744.00 – $107,550.56 – $146,357.12 per year. The range represents the minimum, midpoint, and maximum pay for this position.
