Position Overview
Reporting to the senior director of strategic communications, the News and Public Relations Writer/Editor serves as a primary editorial partner for the university’s news and strategic communications operation. The role supports the university’s strategic communication efforts by contributing advanced editorial expertise to the creation, coordination, and dissemination of news and information that enhances the institution’s reputation, engages key stakeholders, and aligns with university goals.

Responsibilities

Provide editorial leadership for day-to-day newsroom operations and support established priorities.

Exercise delegated editorial authority within the newsroom.

Demonstrate exceptional news judgment, strong collaboration skills, and ability to thrive in a fast‑paced newsroom environment.

Assist in developing communication strategies and management functions essential to the department.

Minimum Required Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in Journalism, Communication, English or related field plus two years professional experience in a newsroom, agency or organization conducting public relations and communications.

Ability to identify and seek sources for news stories.

Knowledge of and experience using Associated Press style.

Experience converging new technologies in news delivery such as new media and social networking technologies.

Preferred Qualifications

Five years experience working for a news organization.

Experience developing communication strategy and management functions.
