Summary
The purpose of this position is to assist the Director of Photography in providing photographic content to all our platforms. The Photo Editor also helps in managing the clerical needs of the department. This is a growth position at the Monitor, with support for expanding responsibilities and assignments as the individual demonstrates deeper capabilities.

The Photo Editor approaches this role with curiosity, open‑mindedness, and a willingness to set aside personal bias. The editor applies rigorous journalistic principles, treats all points of view with diligent inquiry and respect, prizes photos that promote calm over fear and insight over assumption, and adheres to the Monitor’s founding mission to spread the Science.

Key Responsibilities

Adopt and promote the newsroom’s three pillars: scrappiness, rigor, and unwavering fidelity to the mission.

Utilize technical expertise in digital photography to support a small, collegial photo department.

Maintain a strong eye for compelling news photography, apply best photojournalism practices, engage in continuous learning, and work within established processes.

Support the Director of Photography by running the department when required.

Attend editorial meetings and advocate for best photo usage.

Review incoming pitches and drafts for the department’s awareness.

Research and assign photo shoots; accept and process photos for publication.

Search news services for relevant photos, understand and work within budgets, and collaborate with page designers.

Contribute ideas for photo stories; track payments and perform clerical database updates.

Master the content management system and photo archive; coach staff writers on photography, including feedback on submissions.

Understand photo sequencing and layout; discuss decision‑making with all parties.

Capture photo assignments as directed by the Director of Photography.

Education & Experience
• A bachelor’s degree and/or relevant experience in shooting news stories, and providing support to photographers. • At least five years of professional experience.

Work Environment
Works in the Boston newsroom four days a week.

Pay Range
$76,025 - $98,832.20 annually. The offered salary will be determined by factors such as education, experience, and internal equity.
